Hello

I left my car for 8 months without driving due to lockdown and now it is mouldy inside.

What can I do?

Can it be removed so that it is 100% safe or do I need a new car seat or car?

Thanks!

Yes it can be removed. By you with repeated effort and plenty of airflow.
Would recommend wearing a respirator of some kind and clothes you strip out of before going in the house and immediately wash the clothes.
Mould spores can be problematic to some people and ideally you do not want them spreading.

Put a dehumidifier in the car for 24 hours or more, a mains powered one more typically used for home/office.
Wipe any hard surfaces with a diluted babies bottle sterilising solution such as Milton liquid, or similar in tablet form.

Ditto for wearing a Mask, a proper one not a Covid disposable one.

Mould spores can be dangerous, get a specialist. I have a mould allergy, causes me lots of problems.

I thought people only used this statement to get a better council flat
I had no idea it was real

Would you believe it was actually caused by a damp housing trust flat. Who kept telling me I had 'too much furniture'. I had piss all, I was skint, working for my dad who paid me below the NI and tax threshold. My husband was disabled and worked 6 days on, 6 days off. Too much furniture ffs.

When my baby son was diagnosed asthmatic at just under a year old the council finally housed us, but I have had more than 5 operations on my nose because of it, I have asthma which is under very good control unless I have an aspergillous flare up, then I need steroids, I have had no sense of smell for 30 years because of it, and last year was diagnosed with bronchiectasis because of it.

There is absolutely no excuse for social housing to be so bad that it creates damp, and for landlords to ignore it or blame tenants. It;s really no joke, if someone is in a damp council flat, especially will small children, they need help to get out , or get it fixed, not judgements.

Contact a good local mobile car detailer, they will have a wet vac and a range of products like an anti odour enzyme spray to not only clean but remove the associated damp smells.

Don't faff around yourself, a mouldy interior is a specialist job if done right. The bonus is, your interior will be spotlessly clean after the work is completed, all surfaces will be treated and protected.

Milton is just diluted bleach. It's a superb bit of marketing, taking a generic product, diluting it down and selling it at a premium.

If it's really that bad that you can not clean it yourself as suggested above get a proper professional car valeting service in to take care of it. I would also suggest if you not using the car a lot invest in some dehumidifiers have them in two of mine which are not getting outings at the moment you will be surprised how much moisture / water they pick up, works a treat.

My only recent experience is using MIlton in tablet form in a jug of water to eradicate green mould on a convertible car's roof, and hard surfaces inside. I wouldn't want to be doing that with bottled bleach in case the mix is wrong.
