Just a simple question, should metatags be different on each page of your website?

Does this help SEO greatly?

Whats the disadvantage of not having them change?

Will it improve my ranking in search engines?

yes
probably not greatly (in google at least)
if they are different, they are more relevant to the page (in your fancy dress site they could be relelvant to the individual costume - ie halloween, xmas etc)
to some extent

each meta description, title etc should be unique on each and should relate to the main product on that page

So the bit that comes infront of microsoft internet explorer and the words on the tab? Thats the metatag is it?

without being disrespectful gemma you ask an awful lot on here about SEO. whilst i'm not against this per se, i find you still asking basic questions like this a little bewildering.

go here: http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/ get the ebook and read it. it's VERY good advice. i think you need to learn, retain and explore the information given to you instead of asking questions on a whim.

also, if you have installed webmaster tools which was suggested to you a while ago, you would see that google flags up your pages with duplicate tags. not a worrying issue, but clearly google does take it into account.

I pay my money to find out information, otherwise what would be the point of me paying!

I think what you need to understand is maybe people arent as clever as you and this is a learning curve for alot of people starting a small business that cannot afford £750+ per month.

I read alot of other information about SEO on this site and on others and do pick bits of information up, however sometimes i may need to ask one silly question or one serious question but im trying to learn and thats why i am here on this forum.

i understand but seriously, check out that ebook - it's written in spoken-word so it's really easy to read. i'm not that clever, i just read loads :)

Thanks i also found a useful item in google searching for where are metatags found and i think i understand it more now.

So i want to change the title tags on each page as that is good for SEO??

Have just requested my free e-book! woohoo! Ill have a look through - i get lots of SEO advice through my mailbox everyday, i also get PR/marketing etc emails through however sometimes i need a quick answer to a specific question

So for your site.

If you have a costume of a bat - you could have:
Title: Bat fancy dress costume from gd fancy dress
Meta description: scary bat costume available from gd fancy dress idea for halloween (maybe expand on this a bit more)
Meta Tags: Bat costume, fancy dress, halloween (etc)

then a santa outfit, change halloween to xmas, bat costume to santa etc

dont worry, keep reading, keep asking and you'll keep learning. I didnt even know that SEO exsisted when I had my site built but i came here by chance and what I've been helped with is fantastic.

Meta tags are html codes that are inserted into the header on a webpage, after the title tag. They take a variety of forums and serve a variety of purposes, but in the context of search engine optimization when people refer to meta tag, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and meta keyword tag.

I have to agree here - I thought the point was to help people out rather than just be a discussion forum for experts. Like thebookiesoffers I have picked up a lot of info from the boards - often from questions asked by other newbies like Gemma.

Regarding meta tags I was under the impression that they were of little value in terms of SEO. The title and meta description being very important. Happy to hear otherwise though....

All three major engines have stopped taking the Meta Keywords Tag into account.

All three major engines read and Description tag - sometimes they use that as the blurb under the title in your listing in the search engine - eg:

Web Design, SEO and Marketing - West Midlands | BarringtonMedia [1]
BarringtonMedia specialise in Web Design and Development, Print Advertising and Marketing, Branding and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) [2]
barringtonmedia.co.uk/ [3]

[1] Title tag - taken from your page
[2] Meta Description tag - OR randomly generated "snippet" from your content.

Write this to be engaging, relevant, and make people want to click.

[3] Link to the actual page.


- It's as simple as that really - descriptive and relevant Title and Meta Description tags.

Don't bother with the Keywords tag, Yahoo was the last engine to pay attention and they stopped in 2009.

title tag put key words in it, look at the title of my elec site, you can make it that long it gets read. just make meta descrip interesting it has no seo value, and you just put what ever you like in the keywords tag its pretty un important, just get the most valuable terms in the title tag, and in the h1 tag.

I'd definitely read through these. The SEOMoz uses diagrams to show where to find things like the Title tag on a site and also there are lots of images used which can make things slightly easier to understand that reams of text.

Title and description is probably enough...look at the source code of the top ranking sites...some of their code is terrible!

The meta descripition tag and the meta keyword tag are not seen by user. Instead, these tag main purpose is providing meta document data to user agent, such as search engine.

You should be targeting different keywords (2-3) per page and therefore your meta tags should reflect those keywords.

The strength of meta tags are debatable, keywords are particularly useless these days but the meta descritption is often used in the short description under your results title in the serps.

So, yes they should be different.

Unique meta page titles and H1 tags on page are important, everything else is secondary. It won't improve your rankings per se, but suffice to say that every little helps. Having these unique elements in place and then building links to the page, THAT will help your rankings :)
