Don't you mean Meta descriptionsS?

You need a different one of each page (just like the page titles).

@JamesMason67 What site is your looking for updated meta descriptions for? The one in your signature?

What I tend to do is look at what the competitors are doing, purely to see if anything sticks out. If not, I start branching out a little further to different industries which are close to mine and see if there is anything that sticks out to the point that I would want to click.

I do a bit of work for a few large companies and we noticed a small increase in CTR (click through rate) when we changed from a general about the page description to a description which stated a free brochure and consult was only a click away.

If you offer free consults, quotes then that might be a good place to start. Also, I think a good one if if your company has been around for say 15 years or more then mention the age of company. For searchers they will notice the numbers at a glance and it shows the company has been around for a while and has the experience.

Thank you.

I can certainly help you with this if it's still required. I often find that meta descriptions are some of the most underutilised pieces of copy out there in the online world. With the right descriptions on the SERPs, you can pull a higher CTR (and therefore more traffic) than websites ranked multiple places higher than your own.

There's also a fairly solid theory that Google measures organic CTR performance as an SEO ranking factor, and then adds more weight to websites which are pulling in a better CTR relevant to their ranking position in the search engine results. This makes a lot of sense, as if a web page is receiving an unusually high organic CTR for its given position, this is a good indication that it's more relevant to the user's search term and is therefore deserving of a higher ranking.

Feel free to send over a PM if you would like to discuss this further.

Hi James

In case you want to have another stab at it yourself I've written a piece on writing for meta descriptions here http://www.freshbananas.co.uk/meta-description.html which might give you some inspiration?

Meta descriptions require the writer to be good at very short, sales based snippets of copy. I can wholeheartedly recommend Steve Gibson who's particularly clever at this sort of writing.

Good luck.

When It comes to writing Meta Description for the search engine. It's very important that you always write for users first and search engine second. Here are few points to write effective meta description.

1) Keep it up to 155 characters or less
2) Incorporate call to action & offer
3) Use action-oriented Language
4) Provide solution or benefit
5) Make it specific & Relevant

You should focus on your titles and not meta description, Google has start replacing it with random one with snipped content the page.

Meta descriptions can be over thought out, to the extreme of being spammy - be careful.

Definitely does, theres a whole blackhat service for it that pays real people to click. Works out too expensive for high volume/low paying keywords but for local I've heard it works well:
