Maybe drop a few teases about what area of business or area of the country, maybe even a bit about yourself?

Of course, her profile picture does show all her business information: what she does, where she is based, her phone number, postcode, etc... :)

Yes, prospective mentors needs to put themselves out to investigate whether she's got a profile filled and whether there's any useful information there about her business and/or why she needs a mentor? I get it.

They should then form an orderly queue below.

    Cut her some slack..
I notice nobody's feeling sorry for me despite the sh*t stirrers :) - @The Byre and @JEREMY HAWKE - who seem to have taken up a full time occupation driving mentees my way!

Wow, I wasn’t expecting this when I signed in. I really don’t think I deserve the rudeness I’ve received from a lot of you, I haven’t been rude/offensive in my post at all!? I haven’t stated what I need help with, whether the idea has launched, whether it’s my admin business that I want help with. I didn’t want to put all of the information in my post. You’ve acted like vultures.

I have to agree - this thread in particular does come across like an old croney's club..

Not a great message to newcomers

While I agree that people have been a little harsh, you haven't had anyone respond on the forum offering to help or asking for more detail. That is probably because there isn't enough information in your post to interest most people.

Perhaps if you had said you are in this town doing this business and wanting to expand into doing that work and you are looking for a mentor to advise you as your current efforts are not working.

Your post was the equivilant of - can someone help me? - without providing anything to catch the eye.

All that is in her profile photo, along with her email and phone number.

Very possibly, Ashley, but very few people would bother to go to the effort of looking, as the original post says nothing of any interest.

I've quickly learned that there are two very broad camps on these forums:

    1. The polite, helpful sort who understand that every question is a good question if you don't know the answer.
These people will use their general or specialist knowledge to guide you.

    2. The miserable old self-proclaimed 'experts'.
These people are full of themselves, and display the sociopathic tendency to big themselves up by doing their best to criticise others.
You must understand that you'll NEVER know or achieve more than these people. If you've been to Tenerife, they've been to Elevenerife...

    Ignore them.
Type 2 only want to know details basically because they're nosey.
Type 1 understands that there is some level of generality that may be applied when giving business advice.

    Good luck!

I don't want to ask for anything specific publically, hence the lack of information, obvious really.

AllUpHere - the intention is definitely to be mean, and you should all be ashamed. It doesn't reflect the level of effort I want to put in at all, what a ridiculous thing to say.

Toby Willows, your response is also ridiculous.

I'm not going to dignify the rest of the men's club with a response.

Thanks to everyone else who commented, I've actually had 6 positive private messages in response to this post, so it can't be all bad!

Yes, there are people on these boards who've been registered for years and made a grand total of 40 or so posts.

And there are those who've spent hours of their time helping numerous posters ... and have the "Thank Yous" to show for it. If you spent a little less time on your high horse and a bit more time reading posts from the likes of @The Byre, @Newchodge , @Alan and even me, you'd have a bit of a more informed view about how we go out of our way to help new members who take the time and trouble to create a proper OP.

I didn’t want to put all of the information in my post.
The problem is that you put no information in your post ...and that makes you appear lazy, maybe even entitled. And you're probably not. But the all caps title and the slapdash OP didn't help your case. Anyway, you've got some PMs now. Hopefully you're sorted. If it wasn't for some of those early posters who were "rude" to you , your thread would have died a long time ago without getting you any private messages. I'm delighted it turned out well for you. All the best.

    1. Putting no information in my post isn't really a problem, if this was an issue for you and your friends then you could have just ignored it and moved onto the next post.
    2. I don't agree that I appear lazy, entitled, slapdash, etc.
    3. They were rude, no need for eye rolls.
    4. I received messages before the trolls descended on my post.
    5. Thanks for your well wishes and your input.

You need to learn a lot yet. You can’t just join a forum and say “mentor me”. Your whole approach is wrong which is what I meant by “you don’t need a mentor”. You are so far from the stage of making yourself attractive to a mentor and you need to learn the very basics of social and business etiquette.

You also probably won’t find a credible mentor from strangers on a forum. Maybe a few wannabes with little experience but great egos.

Get out in the real world and mentors will naturally come to you.

What has this forum become ?

Has this forum just become a place for resident ***holes to abuse and turn away new members ?

I have seen a marked drop in new posts on this site and comments like that are probably why.

To be honest with you this should be the "uknotinbusinessbutlikestoslateothersbusinessforums"

I have ghosted and occasionally posted on this forum when needing help and have received some good advice but mostly bitter people just doing what comes naturally.

It's replies like the majority to this post that make me glad I don't regularly visit here for information anymore.

    .

It’s a business forum for businesses to discuss business (or at least that what’s the forum title suggests). It’s not “help me set up a business for free” forum. It shouldn’t really be for the “oh crap I’ve spent all of HMRC’s money” people either, there are dedicated debt forums for those questions. You are right “what has this forum become?”.

Monty python and the holy grail.
    Dennis the peasant.

Dennis interrupting: Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin'
swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power
derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic
    ceremony!
    -----------------------
Dennis: Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just
because some watery tart threw a sword at you!
    -----------------------
Dennis: Oh but if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some
moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
    -----------------------
Dennis: Help! Help! I'm being oppressed! Violence inherent in the system!
    Violence inherent in the system!

And people often ask for help. Some just ask for a lot of help and don't give any more details than that.
Quite what response they expect and what they get can be different.
