Mateus Rose

Might bring a smile to those old enough to have been drinking wine in the 1970's.

Was in Calais the other weekend at my favourite wine shop, and much to my surprise they had Mateus Rose on sale. I reckon it must have been no later than 1978 when I last drank that, but my wife, who wasn't even in Europe in the 1970's, had never tried it, so I bought a couple of bottles.

One disappeared this evening, but my question is: I remember it was slightly sparkling, but what we drank this evening was absolutely still. Was it sparkling, or is my memory faulty?

It was sparkling, in fact thought it still was, or rather last time I had it some 3 years ago it was!! Horrid stuff!!

Well you are both right.

It is infact a petillant type of fizz inside. Very, very subtle.

Cant believe what I find more surprising.....the fact that I know that or the fact that you went to France the wine producing capital of the world and came back with Mateus Rose!!!!!!!

It was only two bottles amongst a dozen cases! And then only because my wife had never tried it.

Well what we drank definitely didn't have any fizz at all, so I wonder what I did buy.

We do sometimes drink rose wine, but usually Sancerre, which is nice on a hot day. For anyone visiting Calais I would highly recommend this establishment:

Actually 'agulha' (Portugese), rather than petilant, (French). Slightly sparkling.
They tried a relaunch in the UK in 2005, don't know if it worked or still has legs.*
