I have taken over my dads web design company and i am in the middle of redesigning the web site and getting a list of web designers i could use.

Once we have the website up and running, I will need to promote it. Problem is I have limited funding to market it and I dont want to spend all off it on Google Adsense or Good Adwords.

So i need some solid advice so that I can get this website off the ground and running?

Okay that might have read a lot worse than it actually is... Alex - did you mean that you are recruiting staff for the company as well as redesigning the website?

If so, you might want to hire someone with SEO skills to help with the redesign of the site, as a lot of this needs to be built into the coding.

Actually, I *thought* I understand exactly what the post meant when I read it... maybe I've got more problems than I thought. ;) BUT if what you're saying is that you're redesigning the site and looking for other designers to work with you and you need help to market (which is what I understood you to say), then several things come to mind.

* Use article marketing. Write articles about website design and post them on the site - hire someone good like me if you can't do it yourself ;)

* Include a link in your forum sig file, that always helps

* Use free ad sites like Craigslist that get a lot of exposure

* Start a blog and post regularly - again, hire someone if you can't do it yourself

Good content is a huge thing when it comes to marketing a website low-cost.

Start local/regional. Check out what companies in your area websites look like. It usually only takes a few minutes to find several that look like they were archived in the Smithsonian during the Thatcher era.

Call or visit them and propose that they start making money from their website instead of scaring off customers.

Combine this with an evaluation of their SEO rankings and a guarantee that you can improve their positioning, and suddenly you've got a winning proposition.

I'm guessing that the business is small and relatively low-key because the web site is offline and for web designers that site is *the* shop window.

The name of the business and your comment about hiring designers implies that you're looking to resell the skills of others. You do not appear to be a designer yourself.

You've already had some useful feedback about marketing. It will cost you in either time or money. If writing is not one of your skills you'll need to find someone who can do it for you, which means paying them or entering into beneficial arrangement. You could advertise their writing services on your site in return for having them write for you.

To succeed on a low budget you need to think creatively about the opportunities around you.

I hope it goes well.

Details aside, I will answer your call for marketing advice:

1. Networking - on and offline; forums, BNI, local events
2. Call business link and find out about going on their approved suppliers list for your area - they are all different so you need to speak to them to find out the options available for you
3. Write some articles, blog, set up on twitter, linked In etc.
4. Get in touch with the trade press for sectors you wish to target and ask if you can contribute to any features they have coming up
5. Bulk print some leaflets with a strong offer and hand them out to local businesses (if this is your market).

Just a few ideas to get started. Good luck with it.

If you are starting at the start in regards to marketing, try Gurilla Marketing. Inexpensive book, with loads of ideas, you'll plough through it and get a really good leg up.

I think the bit people are unsure of is it sounds like you are getting a freelance website developer (or another web design business) to build your website design business website, but I don't think you are doing that, are you?

Best of luck, anyway

Hi

To promote the launch of the new site it is worth trying email marketing, it is probably the most cost effective method and the only method where you can directly monitor the results in real-time.

You need a decent list of clients or subscribers, if you have a decent list of people to email to (that have opted in to receive material from you) then you are half way towards recording decent results.

If the company has a history then compile a list of all previous clients. Then put together a good HTML newsletter stating the company re-launch and maybe have a 'call to action' such as an introductory offer.

We have an online mass email system: www.mailmanageruk.co.uk you can quickly and easily create great newsletters and send to your subscriber database.

It is free to try, so try it and see what you think?

hi, get back at your business plan, and in there you should have a way to get on with business.
If not, try to do one very simple to start and keep records of your moves and what happen. You will be building soon a lot of know-how about your business.
Keep in mind that what your business does, a lot of more are doing also. So you need to have an edge over the others, that should also be on your business plan.
On your marketing plan you should have a way to do marketing, a step by step, follow it.
