Hi Guys, I love reading everyone's comments relating to using a Mac OR PC.

I, myself have made the switch from PC to Mac and I love it. I know Apple products are more expensive however to me, it's worth it.

Anyone else made the switch or looking to?

I would never switch as such, I have a macbook and a PC. macbook is for on the road work and for visiting clients. and the desktop is for 90% of everything else. The desktops we use are 10x better than the mac's though.

Yeah, there are some applications you need Windows for, That's why I use bootcamp. Just out or curiosity, what sort of desktops do you use?

Linux.

Why pay for an OS and all that bloatware when you can do it for free.

Download Linux, burn onto a CD and reboot the computer. That's about as technical as it gets. Don't even need to reformat the hard drive, it runs from the CD.

Our Windows desktops are all made to spec, we did have some Mac's last year but they were to expensive and unneeded. I would love to have a Mac only office, its just to expensive and not needed. For now I will stick to Apple for mobile use.

Linux with VirtualBox for testing things in other operating systems etc

OSX is just posh *nix anyway, go to a terminal and you use bash just like you do in linux

but the hardware is OH so much cheaper so for the same money as my fanboi friends I have ridiculously more power mwa haha

I very recently (last week in fact) switched from PC to very first Mac.

The office is now kitted out with 4 iMac's. They look great, are incredibly simple to set-up and are a joy to use. At the moment had no need to fire up Windows in any way.

Yeah, I went for the iMac - so well built, simple and looks the part. I have had a couple of 'niggles' with the OS but overall, not going back to Windows.

I must say of the selling points with iMac/Mac is their magic mouse and keyboard I've never came across anything associated with Microsoft that performs as good. The finger gestures on the magic mouse certainly saved a lot of time.

One issue I had with the Mac is I've had to install some apps which enable some window functions such as the green re size button to maximize to full screen as opposed to the original view.

...Never used Linux - I don't really know but it seems too technical...

This answer sums up why all these Mac vs PC comparisons are irrelevant IMO

I am a regular user of both Windows and Linux currently and have happily used Macs in the past.

Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses and I would select the hardware, OS and software that is best matched for the job in hand.

What would you class as the main strengths for a Linux machine? just out of interest.

Free software - with BOTH meanings of free.

The ability to customise it however you wish.

Maybe not on the desktop but Linux is becoming ubiquitous - it's just that most people don't realise it yet.

There are plenty of other reasons but I will leave that for the hardcore Linux fans - they won't consider me a true beliver as I also still use Windows and I don't spell it with a 'z'.... ;)

Linux or some descendant does power the majority of devices around us from your fancy TV remote to freeview boxes and even your car :)

yep just bought a netgear stora

delighted to learn that its runnign linux and you can happily SSH in and do all kinds of fun stuff

not bad for a box that costs £50

Linux's main strengths are I think:

security

freedom

stability

professional focus

the main things wrong with it are that:

1. You can't run the adobe suite on it (replace with whatever windows/mac only software is important to you)

2. You can't play windows games

if you could do both of the above then I would probably never boot into anything else

with everything going cloud based the linux desktop makes more and more sense for basic users

It's an unfair comparison, like asking if a Ford is better than a Mercedes. Both will get you from Penzance to Newcastle in the same time. One will do it cheaper but at the expense of slightly less comfort and a lot less image.

Macs are beautiful machines that work superbly. PCs running windows 7 are almost as good but don't have the same image or completeness of design and that 'finished' feel but they cost half as much.

The only area that Macs actually provide a massive cost advantage over PCs is with their multiuser server, which is both fabulous and low cost.

Linux, is superb for internet servers and very good for personal use too - but it's still too geeky for most ordinary use and about 5 years behind in design terms.

I use all three operating systems and I'm personally very distressed to report that I would choose Mac now if I had to have only one and price wasn't a consideration. Just like most people would pick the Mercedes instead of the Ford.

We switched from PC to iMac recently and would never go back to PC again....oh and got iPad now as well.....which gets used every day!

To me, iPads are just larger iPhones with slightly different browsing.
Very good point CJD, I heard a saying the other day 'Macs for fashion, Pc's for software' don't really agree with it but I can see why most people would think that.
