Hi all, I run a small nutrition business and I’m looking for a reliable, reasonably priced website designer/developer (UK-based ideally). I tried a freelancer before and it didn’t go well, so I’m keen to work with someone professional who’s used to small business sites. Any recommendations (or what to look out for / avoid) would be really appreciated?

I'm too busy at the moment to offer, but in my opinion, things to look for is someone who will build a website on an open source system such as Backdrop CMS, Drupal, WordPress, etc rather than someone who will build on a proprietary system such as Wix, Squarespace etc.

This will ensure that you are not locked in to a particular provider and/or host and that different providers will be able to work on your site and your site can be moved to a different host if needed.

@CassieJ - is this a blog, brochure site, ecommerce or something else?

Sorry, dont know any to recommend, but one selection criteria is around whether they ask questions around purpose, marketing strategy etc, or just show you pretty pictures

I am sure there are website builders on here that would fit the criteria, with this proviso.

You don't define what you mean by reasonable price. Because if you want someone to spend time understanding your needs, that will cost more.

Design is, of course, a bit subjective. Looking at a portfolio is a good idea though.

Ask the painful question. What happens to this site if we fall out. You need to know that you get to keep it, and can move it to another hoster if you need to.

I'm a bit clueless with tech to be honest.
    Hi Cassie

Given the above, my advice would be to get in touch with at least 3-5 companies that build websites.

Generally, the more questions and the more specifics they ask you about what you need, the better.

I would also be wary of offers that sound too good to be true.

Worth having a chat with @Paul Carmen who knows his stuff and can get a site built, including online bookings etc.

For best results, you really need to have a marketing strategy to build the site around.

@CassieJ Like any project, you need to ensure you write a good brief, being specific on what you want the website to do, look like, pages etc. You also need to prepare the copy and, ideally, supply the images.

Not doing this, in many cases, ends in disappointment, failure, stress and cost!

I want it so that people can book 121 coaching sessions but down the line I'm thinking of selling products as well, I guess not too complex but with a blog I think because of SEO. I'm a bit clueless with tech to be honest.
We primarily work with bespoke solutions, so our websites don't come with the usual wordpress UI for admins.

Feel free to PM me for a no obligation quote.

Hi Cassie, we specialise in ecommerce Wordpress (amongst other things), and we've done several websites in your niche.

DM me or send me an email and let's get on a quick call to discuss your business needs and give you an idea of website prices.

No obligations or commitments on your part, just value.

@CassieJ We specialise in web design that generate leads or sales, that means we don't just build websites that look nice, or for the sake of it. A site that can't be found and isn't compelling for customers is a waste of everyone's time.

We use your business and marketing plans to ascertain what your customers need and create websites designed to rank in search engines and convert potential customers. If you don't have a plan, we help you research your customers, plus where they look and what they search for.

We specialise in generating the leads for you, via research, PPC, SEO and digital marketing, combined with an advanced, fast, and secure website to generate lead processes that makes you money.

If that's something that sounds interesting, then please get in touch on here, or via the details below.
