looking for a free website

Well it is true and I think most people in here would agree.

I am not telling you this because I am seeking work and we are busy right up to the year end but a spend of about £500 on an optimised website for your particular business would be a really good investment. It is normally quite easy to get results on local niche businesses like yours.

Well if you are just looking to try a few things out before committing to a design etc then http://www.moonfruit.com/ lets you do this for free. However if in due course you are looking to a web site as a business portal then you would probably be better off getting something designed with search engine optimisation in mind. There is lots of free stuff out there. There is a lot of sense in not spending money when you are starting, until you really know what you need. http://www.ava.co.uk/free/free-applications-and-services.aspx gives a list good of free eqivalents of many standard paid for products. If you want to start looking into SEO (and you should if you are mentioning web and business on the same page) then http://www.ava.co.uk/support/faq/si...eryone/free-seo-tools-to-get-you-started.aspx is worth 10 minutes of your time. If you get a handle on this, you will be able to decide between the SEO guys that offer a service better than you can do at a reasonable price and those that just see you as a revenue stream.

You really do get what you pay for. If you think that building a free website will enhance your business then I'm sure there are many available. It may be a short term solution but beware many off these free offerings are difficult to scale up at a later date. In my limited experience I've found Wordpress excellent especially with a few plugins.

Best comment of the thread!

You went to gbbo t register your domain - good. Now get a simple hosting package for a few quid a month, making sure you can install Joomla or Wordpress. Install and learn about the package, then build the site you want.

Learning even the basics will be good for you, especially when you are in a position to get a proper website desgned.

Aaaaaaaaaggggrrrhhh!!!!

Prepare for a frustrating journey. GBBO is one of those stupid ideas that is only going to make money for Google. The sites will never do well in the searches so Google will 'suggest' you pay for some advertising. Whilst PPC isn't always bad it may be totally unsuitable for your particular business.

As suggested by many, investing in a decent site and you will reap the benefits. Go down the cheap path and it can be much harder to get the site to make any money.

gbbo is the bad idea for a business site. First of all, I would never recommend free hosting for Business site, however, if you are seriously looking for Free hosting, you can get a free domain name or atleast pay for domain name and use Blogger. Blogger is the best way to go for Free website. Unlike other hosts, you are assured about uptime with Blogger.

There is nothing wrong with GBBO, it's just the free google website attached to it .... You can get the free gbbo domain then move the domain to paid hosting with NO hassle, either email the GBBO team or login to your account and do it.

Domain names cost about £3.00 per annum. Any business that has to spend the time doing this to save £3.00 needs to have a wee think about their chances.

Most web designers will throw in the domain name if £3.00 is an issue for you.

If you really have zero budget I would consider a listing at FreeIndex before a free website.
Freeindex pages usually rank well for local search terms, look professional and allow customers to review your service. All in all a much more valuable promotional tool than a cheap looking rarely found website.
