Is it worth acquiring the .London domains?

no, they are money making schemes by the registrars, why would anyone want / use one?

I would say 90+ percent of the UK will never hear of them or even use them, it's just a waste of money.

All the new domain types are just to make a quick buck, and people are falling for the marketing :|

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss them personally. For example, if you run a taxi company, you could have mynametaxi.cab and I think it could work quite well if marketed well enough and I suspect that it would be the same elsewhere depending on the business.

If you are a London business or that is your main market then I can see the point in .london domain extension. It can give you the opportunity to acquire a name that is already taken with the .co.uk extension.

I was wondering whether I should take it just to stop someone else taking it. I haven't bothered with the .co or .eu or any of the others but London is where we are based so a bit worried someone could start trading with our name.

For the sake of £25 I would take it myself. It does give you that little bit of protection and it could come in useful further down the road if you change the business in some way, diversify, introduce a new product or want to test something.

Choice may vary from want to buy to not to buy.. if you develop it then its worth. It will still sell, I personally feel so.

Personally I wouldn't bother, but for the sake of £25 it's not a big risk to own it.

Google, the number one search engine, ranks searches by relevance. If you are in the UK, and .co.uk domain is likely to rank higher then it's .com equivalent as it should be more relevant to you. (This is just one of many factors however!)

I can only reason therefore that the .london domain will rank higher for people who are doing searches while in London.

So if you are a wholly London based business then for £25 it's worth getting it to find out isn't it?

I think its only worth it if you can grab generic terms just like someone registered business.com but it seems having tried a couple I get the message 'cannot be awarded for legal reasons'

As the others have said it could be worth it if all the other major TLDs (endings) of your preferred domain name are gone and you wish to shout about a London presence/association, but generally it's best to avoid as the launch of such TDLs are mainly money-making schemes.
