Hey Guys,
What are the members thoughts on which is more potent? Local Pack, Organic or Adwords?

Assuming the rankings are based on local businesses eg Plasterer Manchester which of the three types of listings is most likely to be clicked if you had a presence in each?

Hope that makes sense?
Thanks very much
James

As it is for a service that is not super urgent such as a locksmith or plumber, I would assume people would take their time when researching companies. This to me would mean they would want to look at reviews etc which is where the local pack would fall into it. I know some people stay well clear of the ads at the top of google, but other's don't really care. Usually if you rank in the top 3 of the local pack, you should also be ranking around the same place in organic. For me I have always seen Organic have around 20% more conversion rate compared to PPC, but each industry is different.

Hi James. If you are looking at where to focus your spend & time and by organic, you mean the business website ranking, you should probably include Directories (paid or unpaid) in your options. For the example you gave, 'Plasterer Manchester', the top 3 organic listings are directories. No doubt a good share of clicks are going to those 3.

I have heard before that people are sometimes reluctant to click paid Adword ads. What do you reckon is the psychology behind this?

This being the case, do you guys think Local Pack or organic is more likely to be clicked?

Ie., where should I be spending most time optimising?
Cheers

Local businesses that serve a local area will reap the best returns from visibility in the local snack pack results or AdWords with local ad extension. Providing there is the search volume, these will be triggered and give greatest prominence (on any device) enticing majority click-through.

James, don't lose sight of the big picture. Optimising your landing pages for both the user and organic results will mean you'll pay less for your Adwords clicks. You want those 10/10 quality scores which are based on keyword relevance, which in turn will help you rank organically. If it's a competitive niche, optimising your pages for organic results will improve your chances of getting into the local pack. Of course, you might want to look at directories to cover all bases.

To answer your question 'where should I be spending most time optimising?'. There is no single answer as everything goes hand in hand.

Thanks very much Geoff.

So to summarise, you reckon organic least effective of the three possibles?
James

The priority would be local snack pack optimisation if you are talking about your masonry business.

Then landing pages for AdWords with the local ad extension.

Which in turn, will also help organic search optimisation, which, as it will generally take longer, should be the least focused on initially (as it is also an on-going process).

That is, if leads and enquiries are your most important target as quickly as possible of course.

Thanks a lot guys. I am simply attempting to get my positioning as good as I can. I cant find any correlation between my organic and Local 3 Pack listings position-wise.

I have someone looking at the 3 pack thing as I have taken it as far as I can.
Thanks again,
James

Yeah Tony
For some keyphrases I can be at pos 1 organically and out the top 3 in local pack and sometimes vice versa.

Have done all the recommended optimising for local, optimising listing best I can, good quantity and quality of citations, consistent-ish NAP etc but to no avail. Its a strange one. I have an old Gplus listing at an old address and phone number for which I have long lost the login details.

I have had 3 SEOs try to convince Google to take it down but with no success. Could this be part of the issue?

As I say I have someone looking at the local pack just now, but he has warned me it will take a while.

I guess what I am trying to find out is how much business/clicks etc I am missing out on by having a relatively weak local listing (for some reason).
Once again, thank you
James

you will get around 10x more clicks with a top natural listing than you would with a paid listing, when discussing natural linkings 70% of the clicks for a search term are on the top 5 sites and the remaining 30 on everything else.

40% of all natural clicks (just under cant recall the exact number) go to the #1 ranked site.

The best place to hide a body is on page 2 of google.

Local listings bascially fall into the natural stats too - hope that helps!

Not in a mobile world .... for a local service search. It's certainly not my experience with national ecommerce searches either.

yep maybe I should have added that the numbers are based on total generalisation of searches (data taken from moz and zerolimitweb research) but it should highlight the important of where you need to be.

I doubt this is having any effect at all. If you were being penalised for it, you would see the effect across your serp rankings and I don't think that's the case. G+ pages have very little effect, if any, on local pack position. I quite often see a 5star rated website positioned below a business with no website. Like so many other factors, sites like G+ are open to manipulation, so their influence is minor.

It's important to keep in mind that the local pack can and will be different for users in other locations. So somebody 2 miles away could see a different local pack to what you see. The same applies to somebody who lives 5 miles away and searches for 'stonemason' without specifying a location. There are a stack of variables that influence who sees what and obviously that includes the relevance of your content.
If I wanted to influence a local pack position, I could try obtaining backlinks to landing pages from local business directories, guides, community organisations, etc., write content for local users, not for Google & sell my service to locals using my meta and page titles (I wouldn't use my company name in meta or titles & I'd focus on the service I provide).

Very interesting guys, thank you. So in a nutshell, Adwords and Local Pack best for mobile users and organic for lap/desktops?

I guess the lesson here is to get the positions nailed across the board.

Tony.. Interesting what you said about people seeing different Local Packs even when geographically close. I didn't know that.

I would think my Local Pack will be doing these things you suggested to improve things

Thank you
James
