Listed in MSN

Hi guys,

Just wondering we submitted our website to google and we do come up via another website which we listed in but if we search in MSN and search for our main keyword we come to the top.

Is it ok to be listed top in MSN and not listed yet in google, or do people always prefer to be listed in google. Just thought not bad for a free listing and we come on top of the page.

Is it always necessary to pay to get listed in google?

We will get there one day.

You need links to your site from other, high quality sites in order to be listed in all the major search engines (there's no need to submit - it's a waste of time actually)

MSN has only a tiny proportion of traffic compared to Google, and so a listing there is unlikely to give you many visitors.

There's no need to pay to be listed in any search engine - just make sure other sites link to yours. if your site offers something unique to visitors it is relatively easy to acquire incoming links by submitting to directories, such as major ones like http://dmoz.org or very small ones like http://www.smooth-directory.com/

I've got several websites and they are all in the top two or three at MSN - trouble is that very few people seem to use MSN as a search engine.

Google will take much longer to crack and you are unlikely to feature anywhere in their listings until the site has been up and around for a year or longer.

Google isn't likely to allow you high rankings for any competitive keywords for about 12 months but if you target some of the smaller but still relevant keywords within your own industry it's perfectly possible to gain high rankings on Google where the keywords are less competitive.
Msn & Yahoo don't have the same initial stumbling block as Google so rankings here will come in much earlier.
Over time, your other targeted keywords will follow suit providing that your on-site optimisation has been done properly.
It is not always the case that extensive link building is required for high rankings but it is helpful towards that end.

Google is the engine to be on if you want to generate a significant income stream via the web.

Hi,

I've just looked at your site and couldn't find a links page. I have one on my site. It's a page which I put on links of websites and then they put my link on theirs. You have to ask the person who owns the website if you want a link back.

The techies will give you the detailed stuff, I'm sure :lol:

Cheers - its quite annoying as some of the press releases I have published do not have an actual link anchored to them, so I guess they would not count as part of the google ranking

Don't simply type your web address into Yahoo's search box as suggested earlier, this will pull up pages with actual links on them to your site but also pages that mention your web address but are unlinked.
The way to find out your links is to type the following into Yahoo
link:http://www.payrollexcel.co.uk which brings up 6.

My site was listed on google within a week of getting it live?

Googlebot visits my site on average 1000 times a month or so.

I'm confused now?

I am not an expert, but i think google continuosly crawls the net, so if you have links in it will find your site quite a few times.???

If you want to check out how many links you have a good free resource i use regularly is

www.marketleap.com ( link popularity check in the middle of page...search engine saturation and keyword verification reports are good ones to run aswell.........and all free!)

it won't tell you where they come from, but if you click on each search engine in the report it brings up the link: search for your webpage in that search engine.

I have a website with about 650 incoming links....peanuts unfortunatley, i am not even an average presence unti i get 1000+ links!!

yahoo! has over 32million!!!!!

Claire, you can get your site listed in Google quickly, just point a link to your site from another site, but if its a new domain then it can take up to 12 months to rank in Google for competitive keywords.

The travel rants site took 11 months, and then started to get traffic from Google. Msn and Yahoo was bringing traffic from day 1 but not a great deal of visitors.

As much as I hate Microsoft, I have dumped Google for searching for sites and have started to use MSN as it's more up to date.

Sites can rank well on Google quickly, but search engines increasingly lack trust in new domain names because of the volume of new spam sites created daily.

If you can convince Google your site is high quality (which involves getting high quality, 'trusted' links) then you can compete for competitive keywords in a short space of time.

I appreciate that this is not easy though, and the average small business website will usually struggle.

Agreed on both points!

But i also find MSN brings up more relevent sites to what i am actually looking for. Google does seem to throw up some rubbish a lot of the time, unrelated to the original search.

Example: i was doing some competitor research for used cars sales in east anglia- the 4 th listed at the time was houses for sale in east anglia!!! Coz that helps doesn't it!

My main site is re-indexed daily and if I launch a new site I just put a link to it from my index page and the new site will be indexed straight away.

Unfortunately whilst the new site is indexed and even got a reasonable PR it still won't rank well for competitive keywords for many months

:lol: well I've never had a problem with the results on Google. I just know from my own experience that a brand new page will take 7-10 days to rank on Google, compared to MSN, which will be 48 hours max.

Google is putting its hands in two many baskets.. if that's the right saying! Concentrate on what your good at Google, and forget the damn earth maps and copying books!

Jen, I'm no expert but if you want me to check out your site to see if it is optimised properly let me know.
