How important is link building today? I have a site which content and on site SEO is good. We have found a way to obtain links from similar sites in our niche and it looks like it could work quite well. With a decent link back to our site from a similar site in terms of context - would this improve rankings?

You have to be careful of the links type but a normal link from a niche site would be a good thing to do. Could be useless if they are comments with nofollow attributes.

Depends on the source page and the target page, authority, relevance and trust.

Niche links can work but it's a citation that Google really wants. For example: a fashion blog raving about your bags, even better if a celeb is seen with your bag.

Make sure the links are not just off a 'links' page or 'a list of our partners'. A single link like that will be worthless and look spammy.

I would create a blog post on your site about a particular product category/subject and then incorporate a link to some of your internal pages and a single link out to your 'buddy site'.

I would then do they same on their site but about a different product category/subject.

That way, it all looks natural, the content is relevant and adds value to the reader. Adding value is key!

With this strategy, you can then sell the SEO benefits to the other sites rather than looking like you are just searching for a cheap link. If you don't want to do the writing then hire a copywriter. You can get a decent to knock out 1,000 words of good content for $50-60. It's an investment for both but worth it because a good link profile shows popularity.

Remember: Keep it relevant and add value to the reader (a.k.a solve their problems).

Link Building is always an important factor for SEO. It helps to create authority and gaining more ranking for targeted keywords.

If your on page seo was good. There is no need for off page technique. increase your website authority when you have relevant traffic from relevant sources

Building quality backlinks to your website is incredibly important today. I would ensure though that the links you have acquired are in someway relevant to your business, and take care to restrict the number of links gained from each site to two.

You should also seriously consider optimizing your website to take advantage of the growing phenomenon of 'voice search' to maintain your good on-site SEO. This method of search has dramatically improved user-experience, is focused on locally driven searches and is enabled for mobile search.

It depends on your business. If you are selling tractor spares or offer help with knitting then voice search isn't going to be a thing.

its always necessary to create links because competition is every industry is so high so we need link building. its a major factor of seo.

Link building is crucial factor for improve website ranking. Before make sure your website have proper on page optimization. because on page is base for link building. Without proper on page you shouldn't do link building

A lot of it is about relevance and, in this regard, links can help.

For example, if your website has multiple links from sources saying positive things - it will help. Furthermore, if lots of links - relating to your industry - are linking to you, then that also builds relevance.

I disagree, if I'm sitting on my John Deere ploughing a field and I hit rut and bend a track rod, I just speak to google, order me a VPJ3713 track rod, knowing I'll get it next day ready to straighten out the steering again.

fisicx seems to be very keen on being the authority here (with pretty abrupt answers!) but link building will always be an important part of the long term integrity of your website. A rounded and varied SEO strategy will help you remain strong and guarded against the often whimsical google algorithm updates and changes. Check out Neil Patel, moz, backlinko, or any other SEO authority if you don't want to put all your eggs in fisicx's hole filled basket!

Certainly not an authority!

For many link building is only a very small part of an SEO plan which itself is only a very small part of an overall marketing strategy.

A well built site that is informative, interesting and adds value with the right citations and referrals is sufficient to rank well and remain so. Those that suffer google updates are often those that rely on link building.

If you plan to take on the world with their website need every trick in the book (which will include linkbuilding) but local trades and services, niche sites and similar don't need to go chasing links.

It's also worth noting that social media and other marketing tools can bring in far more leads than the search engines. Don't put all your eggs in Google's basket.

SEO (and maketing methods in general) will always divide opinion. I think the best thing to ALWAYS do is experiment and find out what works best for you. Take some of those eggs, break them, and try and make an omlette!

Exactly. To say X is the most important things to do is meaningless and misleading. It may the key for your business but that doesn't make it so for everyone.

For example, I've got a product that is very niche. It ranks well on Google because I've got a site optimised for this niche but about 80% of my visitors arrive from other sources. I know someone whose website ranks poorly but doesn't care because he gets so many referrals - he only needs one good lead each week so putting any effort into SEO is pointless.

Link building is important factor because it helps to improve the ranking of web-pages and it also helpful to drive referral traffic on your site.
But to get better results, you need to create high quality content, so that people want to linked with you and build the links from the site that is authoritative.

Yes, the links from a similar site would definitely help in improving the ranking of your website. However, the most important thing is to take care of while selecting the anchor texts for building the links.

Link building is very beneficial for domain rating, and, therefore, for your website ranking. The more domains have your back links (note that these domains should have decent ratings themselves), the better your domain rating becomes. So yes, link building is an absolutely necessary part of your marketing in 2019.

Rubbish. That's about as wrong as it gets.

Google looks for relevance, authority and trust. Google wants citations not self-generated links.

Not sure it is a great approach to waste a clients on methods and channels that you are not sure work for them. Far better rather than experimenting is to carry out proper market research to identify which channels and activities work best and invest in them, rather than investing in channels that you aren't sure will be effective.

Charities are a good source of links, if you have some service or product relevant to a charity that they can raffle. In our case we sometimes give dog rehoming charities a free D, B&B stay, worth £x, which they can then raffle off. We do this in return for a link to our website and of course we can get clicks through from the link, from people checking out the raffle prize. So this might be a useful way for people to generate relevant links from relevant sites and actually increase traffic to their site, given the charity will be promoting the raffle event so they are doing your marketing for you. This soon becomes an annual thing as they will want to repeat the same prize each year.

Given the fact that Google’s algorithms are highly complex and constantly evolving, links remain an important factor in how every search engine determines which sites rank for which keywords. Link building is the most important tactic used in SEO because links are a signal to Google that your site is a quality resource, worthy of citation. In turn, sites with more backlinks tend to earn higher search rankings.

The initial idea of having a link from one site to another was to let users know about your site and follow that link. Then SEO optimisation came along and the system was massively abused to fool Google into thinking all links increased credibility. Over the the years Google have played with the algorithms to make them work more legitimately and not to be fooled by link for link sake.

So, in answer to you question, yes links are important but only if they are in places where people will follow them, if people don't regard them then don't expect Google to either.

that is, you are saying that link building on indexed pages will not lead to a result? Seriously? Of course, it is possible (and most likely it will be) that this method will not lead to an increase in traffic, but here we are talking about the importance of link building in promoting your web resource. And to call someone's statement complete nonsense and not give any arguments at the same time - that's nonsense. I work with search engine algorithms, I have been following their changes for many years, and it's stupid to talk about the fact that this does not bring results. At a minimum, link building can be used to maintain the site's existing position.

Nope. It's not like that anymore. The only links that count are those that enhance EAT. Link building stopped being important a couple of years ago. A properly optimized site with the right content and all the necessary trustmarks in place along with the right reviews, referrals and citations is all you need.

If you work with the search engine algorithms you would know about the changes Google has been making. It's all detailed in the search quality rater guidelines.

Link building is part of SEO that can help for all sorts of reasons. I find that getting the right keywords on meta descriptions an important element in how I do SEO.

I really liked the comment above about seeing what works for your site/ business, because there isn't a SEO strategy that works for everyone.

It's clear from this post that people do SEO differently.

Google have said a million times that meta descriptions play no part in rankings.

Meta descriptions can be important for click-through.

The right sort of link building can help some sites. For the majority it’s just not needed.

I haven’t been on here for a while, and it’s a bit sad to see so many almost robotic answers.

Anyway…

If you’re in a competitive niche that’s got lots of money in it, you need links.

Some niches are treated differently to others (gambling, pharma etc) and the number 1 factor is links.

People give Google far too much credit, they deploy maths and weigh things on importance, depending on the niche.

If you want to dive deep into the weeds, look up the MC4 algorithm.

Also look into tiered linkbuilding. I deploy it regularly with explosive results. But YOU MUST understand what you’re doing.

On the flip side, topical coverage in some/lots of niches what you need. But you need to be able to map out tightly related/clustered content maps and understand internal linking.
