Hi all, I’m planning to launch a multi-vendor website. I have a niche marketplace in mind. Any suggestions for the best platforms? I do not have a huge budget but I have a plan to scale up quickly.

There is no best. There is just the most suitable for your needs. Write your spec, put it out to tender and let the developer offer their solution.

However...

You may need to start with something like https://magento.com/ if you plan to scale up.

Have a look at OpenCart extensions for this:
    https://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=marketplace/extension&filter_search=multi seller

Combined with our guide on how to find good extensions:

Avoid YoKart! I spent February to early May working with them, their site looks to be spangly and promises lots, their product is filled, and I mean filled with bugs, they left us out of pocket - they refused to refund. A refund was eventually gained, but they tried to barter with us to remove a 1 star review in exchange for the refund, we took the refund and left the review in place. We're now looking at Shopify and Webkul for the multivendor solution. Looks promising.

If you intend to scale up its probably best to avoid the SAAS offerings. The best choice is very dependant on your exact requirements. That's not just today's requirements either.

In my experience you do have to budget to pay for decent software and servers if you want a smooth ride with multi vendor websites.

As I said the devil is in the details of your requirements.

I will watch out for YoKart, in that case. I'll give some thought to Webkul too. Thanks!
