Is this keyword worth targetting?

Hello

I was wondering if someone could give me a steer on the below.

I've found a keyword which is dead-on for my website. It gets 1900 local searches per month (according to the google keyword tool).

In terms of the competition, when typed into google without quote marks it has 742,000 results; when typed within quote marks it has 3900 results and when prefixed by allintitle it has 602 results (the numbers being 79,000, 1350 and 261 respectively when limiting to UK pages only).

Does this sound like a keyword I could make headway with, i.e. if I optimised my site/backlinks etc for it, would I stand a good chance of ranking high enough to capture some of those 1900 searches per month?

I have no idea from looking at these numbers how to evaluate the competition for this keyword and know whether its a good keyword to target or not, so any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks

Frances

Hiya,

What does the competition look like for the phrase? Have you looked at their backlinks and the anchor text they use? Have they specifically SEO'd their site to target that phrase?

What is the Google Adwords competition like? Are there a lot of ads or just a few? It is *sometimes* a good indicator that it is a converting or relevant keyword if there are a lot of ads. (i'm sure some will disagree :D)

On the face of it it sounds like it would be pretty easy to optimise for judging by your figures, but that entirely depends on what is up there in the top ten ;)

Just my tuppence

you can easily get on to page one of google with those figures. I have a couple of sites I launched in particular niches of about the same size (with a little more competition as it goes) and I managed to get both my sites onto page one, and above some very well known national brands without too much hassle at all. All I did was follow the advice of a number of quality professionals on here who are happy to share their wisdom. You'd be suprised how many tips you can pick up just reading through posts, and asking a few questions.

I say go for it, even if you create a landing page just for that term, what have you got to lose?

As Jon and Emma have said, from the information you've provided it shouldn't be too hard to rank well for - might be very easy, depending on competitiveness.

As to if it's a good keyword or not is trickier without knowing what it is! Don't post it here (or you're just adding another page containing it :p), but feel free to PM it for an opinion?

If you send me a PM with the details i will do a full analysis of the competition, links etc for you.At least then you can be confident on the amount of work you will need to do.

to be honest i would only use keyword tools as an indication of total traffic which you will never get that figure. The real deal is to use more than one tool (try keywordspy or spyfu) and set an average and this will give you more of a bench marl. I was doing some hefty research for a client only yesterday and used some of the tools to make a decision on viability of keywords! I was astonished to see traffic availiable on other terms that i tried which i already have in the account not near the figures i see through live accounts!! The market can be fickle with some advertisier on bidding on certain days and times etc so just be careful and just use as a guide and then test!!!

Thank you so much everyone - especially matt.chatterley and normansmith who were incredibly helpful in providing additional analysis - it's really nice to be part of such a supportive community.

I've decided to target the keywords, so I'm sure I'll be back to mither you all with specific questions along the way!

Many thanks again
