iPhone 5: What do you think?

I personally wouldn't queue for one but i don't mind that folk do. At the end of the day a lot of people probably spend more time on/with their phone than they do any other device, product, family member so why not get passionate about them. The Apple iPhone is technically an amazing thing and the precision of the engineering is immaculate. Can't say the same about other phones on the market.

I've got one on it's way and i've a few friends that received theirs in the post today and it's a gorgeous looking thing.

I think i may have already said, i am an Iphone 4S user. Since getting this phone to replace my old blackberry, i have never looked back.
Only gripe is as with many, the short battery life. Then it gets used a lot by me. As well as being a phone its:-

  • Email (as most phones provide)

  • I have found the currency converter invaluable for a previous contract i have had

  • There is the travel planner which has advised me of train times in Holland as well
  • I also have an alarm clock app i think is amazing
  • The Tapatalk helps me keep up to date while i am out
  • Brilliant camera on it, with app to upload to FB for purposes of sharing and backing up.
I did also buy the ipad2 but given that as to date spent much time in a draw since i bought it perhaps speaks for itself.

Iphone 5
I see little to convince me to upgrade if i am honest. The battery life is the same, apart from a longer screen, there seems little reason to do so.
I recently spent money on a external battery case for my 4s which would not fit this phone.

So no, i am happy asis for now i think.

I agree though the iphone is more than just a phone. And i am going to say it, you know i am. I love the sky charts you can get with it as well :)

I think perhaps this is a little out of proportion. The iPhone 5 is a small evolution of the 4S.

When you buy a TV you don't complain in 6 months time if the next model is not a massive improvement.

For 3GS and 4 users the 5 is most likely a worthy upgrade. For 4S owners not really at all. I have a 4S and my next step will probably be 5S (if they carry on) or even 6.

The Apple Marketing machine has worked it's magic on the brainwashed but to us normal folk we can see it is not a massive leap and as such think it is a let down and not really very innovative (unless you get geeky and take a look at some of the hardware updates).

True, I wouldn't complain about a new TV model being outdated in 6 months, is just that, personally, I think Apple's marketing is very aggressive, I know that if I buy an iPhone I will soon be outdated ,and feel outdated because of Apple's approach to marketing, i.e. I won't be "cool" anymore.

If you ask me, this iPhone 5 was a minor update, in terms of features and hardware. There is nothing amazing for the customer at all. Look under the hood of the iPhone 5, and what do you see, a huge reduction in components from Samsung - their biggest competitor.

If you ask me, Apple have spent more time designing this thing for the next Court Battle than they have for customers themselves.

This is the fault of Apple, right from the start they built up every product launch to a frenzied level and advertised each and every launch as 'the best thing since .....'

The reality is as the years are going on, they are finding it harder and harder to innovate. Apple fans are screaming out for more, it's a snowball that they have no control over any more.

I really think the tides will turn for Apple over the next few years as the magic begins to disappear from it's products. That is unless they can really pull out some great features from the next few apple incarnations.

Absolutely! It would be amusing for me if Samsung pulled the last components as a supplier to Apple just to see what happened next...

Never known any worthless object get so much publicity just for the name.

Without sounding too opinionated I think Apple run out of design ideas, not to say you will have to pay £25 for an adapter if you want to use it with your old iphone docks.

This. I think Apple has got to the stage where they have an amazing phone but they don't know what to do next. They can't go back to the drawing board and design a brand new phone, because it will end up being an iPhone.

I think for the years to come it's just going to be the major phone manufacturers competing with their touch screen phones, but then someone else is going to come along with a brand new mobile phone which can do much more than the iPhone, much like Apple did when they first introduced the iPhone.

Personally I don't get the whole Apple scenario, sure they're pretty and work well but they incite such emotion from the users! It's a frickin phone!
I totally agree - I've never purchased an apple product in my life and i don't intend to start any day soon! ALL there products are Overhyped and over priced IMHO.
~£400 for a freakin phone - are you people serious!

They could have added NFC, this would be a big improvement for me

...based on what I have read and the pictures I have seen, I am not impressed. I have the iPhone 4, and I thought iPhone 4s, was not worth upgrading for. I was holding out for iPhone 5. I just feel it doesn't have anything that is "wow" and they have improved iPhone 4 and sold it on because they needed to get something out. I love the iPhone 4. However, I also know that people buy some Apple stuff just because it's Apple.

When I break my iPhone 4, I will probably not move to iPhone 5. I will most likely either move to an Android device or the new Windows phone Nokia Lumia or something (which looks good).

Sorry, I've only read the first and last page of this - so it might be repeated.
What do you think?
Nice, an improvement on 1-4S.
Will you be getting one?
Unfortunately I have to say 'yes'. Never had an iPhone, could never really justify the expense when you can get 'just as good' for cheaper. I do however always have that nagging feeling that I am missing out. So I am going to do it at least the once to get it out of my system.
Does having the latest iPhone help your business?
No more than any other smartphone - internet, email, telephone.

I got mine at lunchtime today, it's a very nice phone, much much faster than the iPhone4 it replaced, but that is to be expected. It feels a lot lighter and thinner than I was expecting. I'm looking forward to it being jailbroken so I can use it as I like.

Likewise. We've had our iPhone 5s since launch-day and they're fantastic.

Also chuckle at the negativity thrown towards Apple Maps. Personaly find its fine. Already Maps has navigated me to a weeks worth of meetings, plus a friends Christening without any hassles. Also sure Apple will fix this stuff. They're apparently hiring ex-Google Maps staff.

Also after a week if being in my suit/jean/coat pockets the phone is still scratch free.

Our office is litted with Apple kit of all shapes and sizes. So would be first to admit we're Apple fans. However we've returned a batch of dodgy iPhone 4 phones to Apple in the past so would certainly not have kept these if we were not genuineley impressed.

On a side note. I thought the apology by Apple this week regarding Apple Maps was very astute.

Rich
