Initial link building for new website

No it doesn’t. It stopped working a couple of years back. Google tells you this in their guidelines.

I agree that some guest posting still has value, but it mostly doesn’t.

@fisicx - id be interested to know what you do think works?!

based on the comments in this thread - that unless you have something worth writing about a PR release isn't going to do you much good - it has to be appealing to your readers and publishing company. & I would say unless its for local, directories won't do you much good either.

Google think people like as much information on the same page as possible rather than having to read extra pages for the information.

If Google think that's what people like, you can assume they will tweak their algorithms to deliver what people want.

Market research, lots of planning, a holistic approach to the site structure, well written and interconnected content, trustmarks and citations.

Initial link building should either be location or industry focused.

For a local business you need to look for local directories and resources to be listed on. There are always local websites.

For a business in a specific industry there are always industry specific, relevant directories and websites that you can be featured your business on.

That's the simplest way to start.

This is something that baffles me.

Lots of people say use local directories or industry specific directories but most directories tend to split things up now anyway so as to create separate area and category sections.

For instance they have "Area Directory" or "Category Directory" sections
They may be on the same domain but effectively divided in to categorised sections.

Or do you prefer "one area directory" or "one category directory" on separate domains?

There is nothing wrong with "hybrid" directories that have both categories and geos as long as the quality is there. We have a lengthy website approval listing process that we follow when deciding if there is value in listing a client on a particular website and often they are these hybrid types.

For example, say you have a psychotherapy business. If you Google "psychotherapist in brighton", for example, you'll see a website called bacp.co.uk come up. It list psychotherapists in Brighton and in the profiles there are links back to their websites. It's a site that rank very highly for the target search term, it's high quality, completely related and has followed links too.

That's the sort of niche specific and geo focused website that we would definitely want to get our client featured on.

So yes, specific niche or location focused sites or a mix of the two is fine....as long as the quality is there.

Your initial idea was good, and you have started implementing it. But it can only be the start of a larger strategy. There are many ways to get backlinks, but I am afraid that only a few are easy

    • Ask for them. Try to think anyone that you know that has a blog or a website in your niche. Ask them and offer a good quality content that you mentioned you have.

    • Give a testimonial. There are many companies that allow users to post comments about their products. . It is a great win/win situation where they will get another user experience post, and you will get the chance to place a backlink.

    • List your site in trustworthy directories. You will need to look for the directories that give you a chance to post a link to your website and provide useful information for your potential customers.

Nothing good is free, you know.
It can be if you know what you are doing. However, your three suggestions are incorrect, two of them have very poor link value and the third is fraught with problems

Don't do link building. Get the on-site right and for a niche, local or specialist business that's all you need.

In my opinion, using local business listings is critical when it comes to link building. Building a strong local search presence enables you to drive relevant, high-quality traffic to your website, attaches credibility to your business for users seeking out related products or services, and importantly - relevant listings can rank along with your website when searches are conducted. All of this will aid in attracting a diverse set of quality back-links to your new website!

    I hope this helps.

In the initial stage Local citations & web 2.0 are the best option for the link building. It will help both in traffic and SEO
