I recently undertook work for a friend on rebuilding his web site in WP but business doesn't seem to be coming in from it. It was in that position prior to the rebuild but I wanted to build upon the social media aspect. Is it worthwhile to undertake a course in Social Media Management or the like? I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone could offer.

websites dont generate anything on their own, they are simply a place to put across your pitch and take the payment. the lead generation still needs to be done to make the website work, as you say social media content, link building etc. just read up of seo and then work on it for a while, it won't happen overnight but the website will start getting some natural traffic. the best way though it to actually do advertising, adwords, leaflets etc. if you don't do that having a website on its own is pointless.

Im sure how to word this without it sounding condescending so apologies but what was the aim of moving it over? What did you do to check whether it would work?

You didnt just think put it on wordpress and everything will be better did you?

I have 2 sites, 1 on wordpress which looks and works very well. Its even geared up for mobiles. I could not tell you where it is in google and the number of hits per month is nothing. My main site is on another cms and that is in the top 2-3 on google. it works on mobiles but its not all spangly like it should be now a days, its just smaller. Im too scared to move it to wordpress as I do not want to lose my top 3 place.

If the site isn't generating enquiries what makes you think social media is going to be any better.

Have you considered that maybe your new website isn't much cop. If you are getting visitor but not enquiries change the site: content, navigation, themes, plugins, call to action could all be wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to try to reply to them.
The new site was built with a WP Template my friend liked and purchased. That was the reason for going down the WP route. Much of the site has photographs of the work they do. The site could do with more text content on it to be honest. I have requested such but it is slow in coming to me.
I want to tackle a few different options such as FB/Twitter. Does anyone supply FB/Social Media services? Is this indeed possible? I was looking at the FB aspect and you can only make a Business Page from your Personal Page

So if your friend is slow to provide content for the site they aren't going to be any better at doing the same on social sites. Of course you can employ someone to do the posting for you but it's going to be wasted money. The new business will come from the website not facebook.

Focus on the website. Get them to provide the content and work on converting visitors into clients. This doesn't happen overnight, it can take months to fully optimise a site.

Websites don't generate business by themselves, they have to be marketed somehow. Whether this is via PPC (both Facebook and Google), SEO, leaflets, forum advertising, etc.

Social media management isn't really for generating leads in my opinion, it's more to build a brand and show some sort of authority (at least that's how we explain it to our clients). But I suppose it depends on your industry.
