I am looking for some advice on importing products from china/india etc with regards to customs charges when arriving in the uk.

Apart from VAT what other charges can be applied? I believe there is also a handling charge? Does this go by order value or weight etc? Is there anything else to look out for?

Thanks in advance for advice...

1. Import duty. You can find out the percentage (which applies to the total order cost including shipping) by ringing the classification section of the Inland Revenue and describing the item you are importing.
2. VAT
3. Handling charge is usually fixed. If your parcel is coming by post parcelforce charges £13.50 for priority post and £8 for ordinary post. Courier companies charge more - I have paid about £35 before.

The most important thing to look out for is to check that your goods don't need an import licence - which you can't get without the corresponding Chinese export licence. This covers things such as man made fibres, cotton etc. there is a licensing department you can ring to check - google will bring up the number.

duty is charged, dependant on the type of product. There could also be anti-dumping duty, but unlikely.

of course tax will be charged regarding the type of products.
besides that you should call custom to check that if it wanted some certificate Such as CE.
Handling on port charges will be included.

agree with all ideas in previous threads. i would also think finding a good agent of customs clearance will be worthwhile. that's based on our own experience. pm me if you're interested and i'll give you their contact details.
