Top tip I learned - take out the hard drive and put one of these through it a couple of times :)

    [edit]

Just noticed you're going to sell it on. Perhaps ignore my advice

You will need to copy all the stuff you need off your old mac (including music) to your new one. When you log into itunes that simply authorises the computer to play the music, it doesn't download it again.

    Many Thanks

What we do when we sell on our Applle Macbook Pros is to reload the mac using the original OS X install disks.

During the install select the option to completely reformat your drive.

There's an option to securely overwrite the data, right up to some FBI/Gov'T standard - or similar. Doing this makes it impossible to recover any data.

As with anything, Apple it's really simple and well explained.

What are you upgrading to? 27" Cinema Display and MacPro :) ?

EDIT: Make sure you transfer your files to your new Mac first though LOL.

I'd boot it from the orginial OS disks and format it using the 'disk utility' - then reinstall the OS. That should do it.

If you want to securely wipe all the data first you can use use the built in 'secure erase option' which is built in to the disk utility

yes, DO backup first! I've lost iTunes libraries that way. :(

My suggestion: get what should be an internal hard drive and usb casing on Amazon or similar for very cheap, then use the Disk Utility to 'clone' the entire drive. Voila, you have an exact duplicate! The nice thing about this is you can boot from it in your new computer if you need to or actually swap it into the new computer if the OS is compatible, tho that may violate the warranty. (I've done that but only after warranty expired, so I could put a 320Gig hard drive into my MacBook.)

    Thanks for that.

I'm going to be on the move quite alot now so wanted to get a Macbook Pro, so i guess its not really an upgrade, just a switch. I do love the iMac tho.

Wise choice! We exclusively use Macbook Pro's. Trully awesome bits of kit.

Currently got the new Macbook Pro's with that faster Intel 7 chip. Super fast. Highly recommend ticking the option for the higher res, matte screen.

The uni-body design really makes the unit feel ultra solid. Should last years.
