Had a letter forwarded to me from service address company. From ICO. Telling me I need to pay up to £60 in fees.
I have never heard of this.
Surely this is not compulsory? Sounds like another tax to me.

Do this assessment:

It will tell you if you need to pay the fee or not

It's compulsory to follow the ICO procedures.

Unless you are doing more with customer data than the bare minimum required to process orders then you will not need to pay anything.

As recommended above do the self-assesment you might get a pleasant surprise
I bet I will. And there will be no fee required.
I really don’t like this aggressive approach ‘we will fine you if you don’t pay the fee’. It’s a guilty until proven innocent feel. Imagine for whatever reason you didn’t see this letter. The first reminder or the last threat. They would no doubt sell it to a debt recovery agent? And then we’ll, you really got a job then.
I’d this government run or private? Has a bureaucratic feel to it.

1. It is government run.
2. For some reason the governement expects business owners to understand their legal obligations. Mad huh?
3. Either you fall within the definition and MUST pay, or you don't. You appear never to have heard of the ICO? I don't understand why you are so upset that they have reminded you.
