What is it that you want to do with your website? Flash isn't always the best way to go forwards - for a start, it will not get you placed well on the search engines, isn't compatible with a range of mobile devices including iPad, iPhone and Windows Phone 7 series, takes longer to download and usually stops people from bookmarking specific pages.

There is Javascript with HTML and CSS that allow you to have all the advantages of a Flash website, but without the limitations. If you're not confident of this, then check these examples:

Looks like a Flash website, but is actually powered by Javascript. All content is visible to the search engines as regular HTML.

www.wedesignyourwebsite.com are specialised in flash websites and we incorporate the newest SEO functionality so our clients websites can rank higher than ever. Our clients come first. We are aware of the controversy in the last years about HTLM versus Flash. There has always been a feud between die hard Flash and HTML developers as to which is better. We defend flash for the following reasons but this is obviously open to debate:

HTML cons

HTML is static
HTML doesn’t have a lot of flair and smooth transitions. It’s pretty static. With JavaScript improving with leaps and bounds this may not be the case in years to come.
Fonts
You have to use system safe fonts. Again this may change with popularity of CSS 5. There are already a couple of JavaScript solutions that fix this, but speed is an issue for larger bodies of text.
Hard to make look exactly like creative
If you have a designer that demands the website looks exactly like the creative in every browser, down to the last pixel…good luck. Not an easy task, especially with older browsers. It’s slowly getting better though. The more browsers follow standards, the easier it will get.
Bugs
Browsers are buggy. I’m sorry if you’re an IE fan, but older versions of IE are EVIL. Especially in the CSS realm, things don’t work the way they’re suppose to. Again this is getting better with every new browser release.
Different browsers
As much as I love Google Chrome, it’s yet another browser you have to make sure your website looks good in. After checking all browsers in different operating systems, this can really take up a chunk of your time. There are some tools to help expedite the process, but it’s still a pain.

Flash pros

iPad & iPhone
It has been said only a few days ago that IPad and iPhone will incorporate flash functionality in the near future. Flash CS5 offers iPhone functionality and it will very easy to create applications for the new iPhone to come this year in June.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
Now flash can include metadata on movie clips so search engines can recognise your website so your site can rank higher.
Interactive & Dinamic
The ability to seriously involve a user is one of Flash’s strengths. With 3d graphics and smooth transitions it can really keep a users attention.
Vector Artwork
Up until recently HTML/JavaScript couldn’t display/animate vector artwork. Flash was your only option if you wanted anything either than a graphic and text.
Animation
Any sort of animation Flash can handle like a pro. This makes complex transitions, and immersing displays far more feasible than HTML.
Packaged Up
With services like YouTube’s player you can have a full video player just by embedding it into your code.
No reload
Flash doesn’t need to reload the page after each request. Granted HTML can do this with the help of AJAX but it’s automatic for Flash.
Built in components
Flash offers a variety of different components that you can skin and use to your liking. Styling form components in HTML is possible, but more difficult than Flash.
Immersing experience
This is why most micro sites are done in Flash. It offers the user an experience not just a page view. It has the ability to get people excited about a product or a service.
Audio, video, upload
Media is generally handled better in Flash than HTML. Most players you see on the web are Flash based. Also multiple uploading is a nice feature that Flash offers.
Pixel Perfect
You can design the website to look exactly like the creative with little to no trouble because it looks the same in all browsers.
Fonts
You have a font on your machine…you can use it.
Games
Online games lend themselves to be done in Flash.

is your website a template?

Hi, thank you for your message. Our income comes from be spoke designs and we too have several templates for sale on the net. We create standard templates for other companies to use in a more cost effective way but they are not unique. Only if they are paid in full then they will be removed from the public eye.

I agree with you zeal - sounds like wedesignyourweb has a slight bias against HTML, like with the big headings 'HTML cons' and 'Flash pros' ;).

Flash is good for what it's meant to be used for - providing multimedia content that looks pretty. The primary function of a website isn't to look pretty, but to easily provide information - sites in pure Flash get in the way of this by taking longer to download and stopping people from bookmarking and sending links to specific pages.

My response to some of the above:

HTML is static
Didn't you take a look at my examples? Javascript animation effects for HTML have been around for years. People often mistake Javascript powered HTML as Flash.

Fonts
If you want fancy title fonts, you can embed these as images. You don't really want non-standard fonts as text as this makes it harder people to read your content - especially for those with disabilities such as Irlens Syndrome, which makes it more difficult to read text set in a standard font.

Bugs
It's only Internet Explorer 6 that causes headaches and these can be resolved at the end of developing your website. Bugs also existing in Flash - with Apple claiming that Flash is the number 1 reason that Macs crash.

Different browsers
If you hire a good developer, browser compatibility shouldn't be a major issue. It's only Internet Explorer that has different rules on display and we can create alternative CSS for that *nasty* browser.

iPad & iPhone
I wouldn't hold your breath for iPad and iPhone supporting Flash. This has been rumoured since the launch of the iPhone, but is unlikely to happen as Apple want to control what software is released for iPhone and Flash will provide a loophole in their policy.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
Although meta data is handy, it's not what search engines place high priority on. Flash websites have all their content on one page, limiting the effectiveness of link building campaigns. Furthermore, Flash websites can't show search engines anything about the context of information such as if word or phrase in in a section title, list or emphasised as strong/bold, hence further affecting link building SEO and on site SEO. HTML websites will always rank higer than their Flash equivalents.

Interactive & Dynamic
Javascript can provide as much interactivity as Flash to the point that people not in the know refer to Javascript galleries and interactive feaures as Flash. The Javascript equivalent also has the added advantages of being better for SEO and more maintainable - no need to worry about losing your source code files.

Animation
You have a variety of options here - you can embed Flash components, use GIF or use Javascript SVG animations. There are libraries you can use to support SVG via Javascript across all browsers.

Packaged Up
You can have this with Javascript too - you just embed a simple 1 line include in your HTML head and the script will work.

No reload
You can do this with HTML too, but why would you want to limit your users to not having the ability to bookmark pages or send unique page links such as via Facebook?

Built in components
There are plenty of Javascript frameworks such as the excellent MooTools and even more components such as gallery scripts you can use that are freely available.

Immersing experience
This is why most micro sites are done in Flash. It offers the user an experience not just a page view. It has the ability to get people excited about a product or a service.

Audio, video, upload
You have a choice to use a variety of methods to do this in HTML - including using Flash as a component. New native video features in HTML 5 are as good as Flash for playing videos and don't require addition download bandwidth for the Flash player.

Games
Games have traditionally been created in Flash, but this is beginning to change. Javascript also gives you exposure to a wider range of devices than Flash - including iPad, iPhone and Windows Phone 7 series.

Here are some HTML pros to think about:

Maintainability
HTML can be directly manipulated from a server language like PHP, meaning you don't have to edit your server code and your Flash code separately. If you create your site in Flash and require use of server side technologies such as for databases, you have more work to maintain two separate systems.

Backup
If you lose your original Flash code file, you can't edit any further from what you have on your website because you don't have the source code. Javascript and HTML are the source code, so if your offline backup disappears, you can still proceed with whatever you have that's on your website.

Practicality
Flash websites have to download all of their content from the start. Not only does this cause a delay to your website that will turn people away who are in a rush, it will increase your bandwidth costs if you have heavy traffic, annoy people using mobile broadband because it pushes them to exceeding their small data transfer limit and stops people from bookmarking your pages.

Copy and Paste
You can't copy and paste from Flash websites. Maybe a customer wants to store your contact details or someone from the press wants to take a quote from your website - this isn't as likely to happen if they have to make the effort to type your content, especially if it is a lot they have to copy. Ha, I think I will copy and paste this post as an article on my website ;-).

Don't get me wrong - Flash isn't bad. It has it's place, but purely as a website is not the place. There's nothing wrong in using Flash components for a website mixed with HTML - just like you can do with Javascript; developing a whole site directly from Javascript would be pretty silly.

... and another thing, you can't track what people are doing on your website with a pure Flash website, which means you can't optimise it to produce better results. All good designers will agree that good design isn't about making things look pretty, but making sure that it achieves the goals of the product. In the case of web design, this is usually converting visitors to enquirers or buyers - or reducing support enquiries.

I completely disagree with everything you have mentioned.

HTML is now as versatile as flash and much more dynamic.

To be honest i dont think anyone should use flash for a complete site anymore and i think that due to ajax functionality its more dynamic and much more visual than anything else.

So what if ipod will be using flash, Its already using html

If you want to specialist in flash then that's OK but can you demonstrate how you would optimise a site to rank well in Google. I have just searched for 'we design your website' (it's in your page title) and you aren't in the top 100.

And there is nothing against choice except that one choice is usually better then another and when online HTML trumps Flash 99 times out of 100. Show me one successful online store built entirely from flash and I will give credence to your arguments.

Whoever told you that you can not track what your customers are doing is not telling you the truth. They are amazing statistics packages out there which can tell you, even when flash do not have HTML pages per sei, what they are looking at, what they are downloading, how many times they access a specific .swf file or .flv file. As I told you before, everything has got pros and cons. I respect you want to go for HTML but please respect my business & I. It is good to have choices in life.

Unfortunately for us, they are hundreds of thousands of sites all around the world, all very well built and SEO friendly with the words "web, design, website, web designer" and as you may understand it is quite difficult to rank in the top 100 coz everyone is using the same functionality. On top of that, we have created this company just last January and as I guess you know it takes a few weeks to come up on the top search engines properly.

Yes but every single one that ranks well uses HTML. You don't even rank well for an exact match on your page title, that's indicate a serious flaw in your argument.

And so shall you. The problem is that the threads here tend to take on a life of their own and wander off in all sorts of directions.

Can I ask why you want a flash site as opposed to something usable and accessible?

We are not in any way forcing you to use HTML for your website, we are simply informing you of your options and strategic benefits that will result from whatever decision you make. If there is a technical reason you want a pure Flash website, that that is good. If you want a website that looks flash, then you can have that without compromise on SEO or maintainability.

Out of curiosity can you tell which of the following are Flash?

Wow! That is a really nice site.
Some really good things are coming with Javascript. Some of the HTML 5things are amazing and are getting some of the indie game developers interested too.

Could I have a quote please?
Before you get a realistic quote, you need to provide a specification. A website can take this long .... or this long ........................................... to create - the length of ... and additional resources dictates the price.

Flash CS5 is supposedly going to allow Flash Developers to compile their application directly to iPhone binaries.

... so it's not so much Flash coming to the iPhone but Flash developers will be able to develop iPhone Apps.

I for one really hope this comes to fruition!

Yes looks the part ,but i found it slow to load and not full of any info ,
if i hadnt been so eager to view i wouldnt stay to read what its all about,as it took to long on my connection to load.

classic case of flashy over the top designing. some love it but i didnt .

I like quick load easy navigation and simple to follow..sites..

I agree. It's not a site would use myself but there was some very impressive coding and (taa daa) all done with JS not flash which means 100% indexable, usable, accessible and it works on my iphone.

Maybe it's just you but it loaded in a flash for me (no pun intended).
