How would you search for me?

I think I am relatively well known in here to the regulars through lots of posts. I am working on improving my site listings and having a real problem with the key words. Business mentoring really sums up what I do, but I guess many do not search for that specifically. Business advice, coaching etc too. However, I guess people look for specifics; increasing profits, how to plan, improving sales etc. I would really appreciate some thoughts from those who know me (see my posts if you don’t or my site) what search words you would use to find me. Really value your input.

As always I am very happy to add any value for free to anyone in here. I take on very very few clients (one or two a year) so don’t worry I am not searching for business.

I'm not sure that people that are searching for various terms relating to increasinf profits, etc would necassarily get in touch with you if you did appear on the listings.

More specific terms such as "business mentor" would, I suspect convert better.

The best thign to do is under take some reasearch based on real search data (As opposed to what people say they would search for) and then use adwords to see what converts best. Onve you know what terms work you can then aim to rank for them in the organic listings.

Wouldn't the best way to do this to be NOT to know you or your site too well and see if we can find you in a search? I won't look at your site too hard as that would give me a preconceived idea of what to search for....but will do a couple of searches and see what I can find!! :D

Having said that, I assume you've already searched for the topics you mention! How highly did you rank?

Gosh guys what a quick response - thank you so much

We are using word tracker to see what is less competitive.

I am 542 on Google under business mentor so lots of work to do there. Business mentor UK is 78 largely i expect due to this site. Also like business mentor London as happy to work only here easy to meet people face to face. The problems posted here which I respond to are largely related to marketing planning strategy etc. People also look for business adviser and business coach. I help a lot of small businesses and start ups too. Also wonder if I need mentoring and mentor, advice and adviser etc Oh dear would be easier if I sold clothes pegs!

I really appreciate your input

I think advice would be good - better than advisor, IMO, as many searching want the generic rather than the specific individual - though that may create traffic that doesn't turn into £ it culd help the rankings? One of the first ones I tried had 'advice' rather than advisor in the search, to be honest.

yes Alice I think advice too. Thanks. Not sure if it is better to use phrases like marketing strategy (lots of hits) or small business marketing strategy (not so many but more defined.

Chris Kaday

Depends on who you are targeting - you could find a lot of searches just under small business marketing or business marketing! Would business marketing strategy not pick up a lot of both?

Great Alice agreed. However surely my chances of getting first page ranking in business marketing would be very slim although small business marketing probably a lot less. This all seems to be a balance between finding something which describes you which will not be lost due to competition.

Any more thoughts greatly appreciated as it is make my mind up day today

For what little it's worth the first things that came to my mind were "change agent" and mentoring.... Mind you I've been working with clients involved with this sort of thing recently and their buz words are still buzzing 'round my head like so many demented bumble bees....:p

Given that I know nothing about this my advice is probably either worthless or just exactly what you're after (as your potential clients won't know anything either!).

If it matters, I don't honestly think I'd do a search in the way you're assuming 'cos I'd not want mentoring or anything similar from anyone I had to look up like that. (If I did, I'd search on mentoring, not mentor). I'd be far more likely to use your website to "check you out" after someone I knew/trusted had mentioned you. Thus, I'd suggest it's as important to have SEO done for your name (and variations of it!!!!!) as it is for what you do.

I have professional SEO Alice who has come up with 10 phrases which do not really reflect me. that is why i am asking.

Isn't that the thing though when you get professionals in? They know their business better than you do. And what's necessary to bring real benefits to your business isn't necessarily what you (as essentially an amateur in that field) would have chosen yourself.

For instance, at a guess, I'd say 90% of my clients initially approach me wanting corporate videos made which are anything from thirty minutes to an hour long. In fact most wind up about ten minutes long and VERY few exceed twenty minutes...

People are often STILL shaking their heads and mumbling to themselves until the programme's shown to its intended audience and starts to yield the desired effect.

Good question. I am targeting small to medium businesses who want to expand and don’t know how. That is my core skill. I give most enquirers free advice, take on a very few as clients or on rare occasions might invest. My strategy is to build a large presence which gains attention and interest and out of that find the few people and businesses I am really interested in working with and where I know I can make a difference. The rest are good prospects for my books and possible business growth seminars and networks which I might establish once I get enough ‘supporters’.

Hope this answers the question

Is another tool which will allow you to input all your keywords and turn them into phases. From there it is a question of setting up the key phrases across a range of pages and monitoring the results.

You will be thinking in terms of specific phrases, your clients who may not know exactly what they are looking for may find you via "longtail" search results, so it worth using both concise phrases and the variants thereon. For example the plant(s) hire side of our business people search for topairy as a generic term but usually they are really looking a specific style of topiary spirals, balls, pyramids... but have no idea of the terms.

Not worried about being inundated as have lots of ways of offering value to a large audience - business topics, seminar, book and so on. That way I positively influence a lot of people with a little effort - great!

The London is there to connect with London business mentor, London business coach and so on as I am advised it will work OK by adding it in as one word but maybe I have to have all phrases with London in them too and maybe small business in them too. Help!!! Any thoughts lovely people?

Gosh thought there was a limit to the words and phrases or was being told there was.

There is no limit at all, if you wanted to go after 5,000 keywords you can but think how much copy will need to be on your site, link tags etc to be able to get any form of concentration of all 5,000 keywords?

The more keywords you have the more of a blunderbuss technique you are going for. It therefore comes down to the traditional do you want to be ranked "OK" at lots and lots of phrases or do you want to be ranked nearly top on only a couple? This is however slightly tempered by how competitive the different terms are - if they are all very easy then you can target more, if they are highly competitive then less is better or find a new angle.

To be honest, if you have an SEO expert on board they are the ones that should be talking you through all of this and also doing the marketing research on what would be sensible keywords to go after in terms of both competitiveness in the market place and ensuring you are having the right sort of number such that you can optimise your site without it becoming unusable to those pesky human visitors that also need to use it and not just spiders
