How often do you update your website?

B

Boxchilli John

I'm very interested to see how often you:
a) update/ refresh your website or b) feel you should update/ refresh your website?

Personally, I see the answer as twofold: updating for SEO purposes (which would include updating content and images) and two, updating from a visual perspective (full website overhaul or branding change).

Typically, from an industry perspective, it is advisable to update your site firstly whenever you feel it needs to be changed (this may include changes to images and content, keywords for SEO etc.), and secondly around every 3-5 years it is worth considering a refresh, which would include larger changes to your website and possibly your brand image.

How often does your company refresh its website?

As often as it's needed. I've got some pages that haven't been changed in years but still rank well.

I do maybe one blog post every few months.

The idea that you always need to keep a site fresh and new is a bit of a myth.

Guys it depends what kind of site you're running :)

I would have doubts about having not fresh News web Portal. But if its company website check once a while with SEO checkers if your website meets standard requirements as they change once a while. If you're all set then you should not change information unless it's blog posts or major changes.

Constantly Evolving!
Although there has be a good reason and a clear benefit for change.
Don't just keep messing around with it for the sake of change which is an easy trap to fall into especially when starting out.
For us..
Homepage gets a makeover around once a month which keeps things fresh.
A lot of pages don't get changed at all, others have brand new content or occasional thickening content out.
We only make design changes if it has a proven benefit to aid conversions.
Also, don't make too many design changes at once, give yourself time to monitor the effects of each change or you may inadvertently make things worse. Leave yourself an easy route back. If you can split test even better.

Why?

From an SEO perspective this is the worst thing you can do. Google likes new, it doesn't like change.

Why?

From an SEO perspective this is the worst thing you can do. Google likes new, it doesn't like change.

Our percentage of users landing on homepage is small in comparison to other pages.
Our top landing pages are product & category.
What we change on the homepage is mostly above the fold. Mainly new offers/products to keep it fresh for customers.
The bulk of the content though does remain static.
But I take your point & that may be that is something I need to look a bit more closely as it may be contributing to my first sentence (although I very much doubt it is).

We post new content 2-3 times a week. We have a robust content marketing strategy.

We also assess our website's performance every quarter. We ask for customer reviews and we have an internal website review mechanism. We try to look for weak points (design, user experience, page views, overall performance) and we make adjustments if necessary.

I think this may be the first thing I have ever won :)

We update our website once every other day with a new blog post (this is not posting for the sake of posting, it will be about our involvement in a community project, tips on how to do something, ideas for blog posts or latest news / changes).

In addition to this we update our Events page 3 times a month as we run 3 monthly events so we update with new details / delete event when completed.

AND (and I know we are super lucky) we update the website maybe 5-6 times a month with a new testimonial from another happy customer.

But the main pages have stayed the same for the last 4yrs we have been in business, with some minimal changes and some new services & languages added.

It depends on what you mean by update.

We deploy updates to our website application 8-10 times a day.

When you say refresh you seem to suggest a big site redesign and launch. I see people do this every 4-5 years. Instead I think a site should change organically and constantly evolve rather than a massive change every few years.

A big change means potential SEO hits, confused customers and many problems. Small iterative changes every day means you have data to backup if your change improved things or made it worse. You can track improvements gradually overtime.

At Calibre Office Furniture, we tend to update our website every couple of years. In order to keep up with the constantly changing online trends. We are currently in the process of creating a new one, which will be rolled out very soon. Please let us know if you have any questions about updating your existing website. Thank you.

Thank you very much; we are very lucky to have some lovely customers. And of course we are organised enough to ask for testimonials too :)

    Thank you though!
I'll admit, when I read your post about having to update your testimonials 5 or 6 times a month I thought ''oh yeah, of course you do'', so had a sneaky peek at your website. How many glowing client testimonials did I find? Well actually I'm not sure, because I stopped counting at 100.

Thanks very much; like I said we are lucky to have lovely clients who are happy to tell people we aren't too shabby! :)

    Hi there,

    Few things here:

    1) Website rebrand = probably once every 1-4 years depending on the company
    2) Regular changes and optimisation based on split testing and measurement - could be monthly or even more esp for ecommerce website
    3) regular content updates i.e. blogs/video etc usually weekly

We update only when we have very good new content worth sharing. One very good article written several years ago still brings in qualified leads to our pipeline. It makes sense to invest the time and do it right rather than have artificial quota of however many new posts per any given time.

Updates regarding design is a) purely aesthetic and mostly unnecessary if the site delivers what it should b) functional when the solution no longer delivers.

In case of a) it's mostly throwing money out of the window on designers who feel that unless site is "beautiful" it can't work. Which is a nonsense for many different reasons.

Just one example of Paul Graham's website: paulgraham dot com Not very beautiful, right? But guess what. It simply works. I believe Paul has enough cash in case it wouldn't work :)

In case of b) it's absolutely justified, but the time frame can be very different and can't be generalized.
