How much does it cost to create your own forum? Could anyone tell be the basics of creating a forum.

all you need is web hosting and a domain name. Find yourself a web hosting company, Some forums are free ie PHPBB.

These forums (UKBF) use VBulletin which is a paid forum application, however if your only going to be a small forum use PHPBB its a great application.

In your hosting back-end, you should be able to install things like Drupal, Joomla or PHPBB, as previously mentioned.

With Joomla and Drupal, you then install add-on widgets to create forums. I use Fireboard for my Joomla site.

Most hosting companies now provide one click installation of popular scripts.

I use heart internet, and you can get phpbb installed with the need to upload scripts via FTP.

I have used VBulletin for quite a few forums and it is an excellent piece of forum sofware, very easy to use and powerfull.

I would recommend PHPBB over VB as it has more addons, more themes/templates, better SEO addons (that you dont have to pay for).

I take it you have never seen www.vbulletin.org then?

Well zero is the entry, you can get a forum of people who host forums.

But as a business you probably want to roll your own or get something like VBulletin.

PHPBB, a lot use but they tend to customise or come over to VBulletin.

It is not too hard to build your own, but the real costs come in when you try and build community and then if you do you need to keep an eye on the bandwidth used.

Moderation a lot will swear by, and unless you want to make a forum your own personal AI project then you will need people to do that if you get popular.

Oddly enough the forums that tend to work, have admin or owners who say very little, if you have a forum you often have to find another forum if you are a bit of a gas bag
