A recent exchange on LinkedIn between myself an a self proclaimed global CTO brought into question their integrity. Just wondering how you handle it when you're caught out, and how much do you respect others when they eat humble pie rather? Some people vow to take lies to their grave - is this really still considered how to conduct oneself, or is it something from the 1950's?
Background:
Popular poster on LinkedIn, having some 100,000+ followers, has a moan about other people copying their words without giving attribution. In the post, they state 4 sentences as if they were the one who coined them, "There are no shortcuts, no tricks. You have to work hard to be successful. You have to be humble. You have to be kind and helpful."
If you quote encapsulate a search for each of them on Google, you'll find 3 of them 10+, 15+ years ago:

So, a couple of decades ago, someone else wrote these words - possibly centuries ago as well.
My point was simply that if someone is going to cry about having their words used without attribution, and their words actually appear to be someone else's, shouldn't they prove it's their words? Should they admit they've used quotes from others without attribution?
When confronted, they turned to the old school, delete the post comments so no one will see that they've been outed. In my eyes, that's how companies did business around the time of World War II.
In the modern age, how would you expect someone to respond when they've been caught out?
Put up or shut up? Eat humble pie? Delete and deny?
What's the right answer in this day and age? You can already guess my answer...
