Hey

Ive tried looking on the internet for the answer to this and im sure to you its a simple answer!

Ive just filed my self assessment and last year i made some profit and paid 600 as a payment on account in January and then 600 as a payment on account in July - ive just done my self assessment and made 8ish thousand pound profit - i know that that is under my personal allowance so surely i should be getting the £1200 that ive paid in advance back? - There was a section that said about over payments etc but it said not to enter any payments in account in that section

Ive got to pay £40 but then thats it - will i get a rebate seperatly?

Thanks

Kim

If the payments on account are more than the liability for the year, the excess will be refunded - provided that either you entered your bank details for the repayment, or ticked the box that requested a cheque repayment. Any tax that you do owe is netted off.

Most of the time the repayment (if requested) is made automatically within about 10 days. Other times it disappears into a bottomless pit and when you chase you will be told that it has been pulled for "security checks"

Are you registered to use HMRC online? Is so, when you log in, the section in the top left corner has a "Request a repayment" option if it doesn't arrive automatically. As David said, even if you fill in the tax return correctly, HMRC don't always automatically send it particularly if you have changed address!
