I recently processed my first routine VAT Compliance Check via what HMRC refer to as the G-Form.

The initial response was clearly computer generated. A long list of requests for additional information. I'm not sure if you would call it AI. If it was AI it was narrow AI and clearly omitted any interpretation of the Notes we provided.

When the Case Worker saw the computer generated response they told us it was a Junior Case Worker and they would have.a word and we need only respond to the next email and there was no need to respond to the long list by the due date the computer gave.

Seemed to be a computer screening process to assist the Case Worker.

So if you receive a seeming computer generated output you should be sure to phone the Case Worker.

There are a few videos on you tube where accountants are explaining HMRCs use of AI .
A leading AI developer has also said on the BBC news this week that AI might kill people I'm wonder if the AI tax man will shoot somebody for non compliance

I used to work for a government department that had a huge amount of client interaction, usually us requesting more information or giving an update. We were not allowed to compose our own letters but had to use templates, originally written by a human, and then amended by other humans, so the templates were designed by committee. Our job involved picking the closest to what we wanted, deleting the bits that were irrelevant, amending the bits that were close and, if absolutely necessary, adding bits. The letters were terrible if you did them properly. I know of several colleagues who just chose and sent a template, which would have produced a self-contradictory, unintelligible communication. While it wasn't AI it was computer generated rubbish.

As are most letters from pubic organizations. They will be generic to cover most eventualities. They don't have the staff (or resources) to review and write individual letters.

Was that the guy from Anthropic who said that there was a 10% chance that AI could wipe out all humans within the next decade.
