Have the car tax changes been publicised enough

I ordered a new car yesterday, which fortunately will be ready in about 3 weeks.

Had it not been and had it been 1st registered after 1st April, the Tax would have been £140 instead of £20.

This was 1st I had heard about this, has it been published enough?

It only applies to cars registered after April 1st 2017
If it's already registered it will still be £20

And this is the outcome of it not being publicised enough.

I was in the same boat and thought "oh bugger my car tax is going to fly up". Only when i decided to research it further did i understand it was for cars registered post 1st April which was a relief, but it proves there is not enough publicity around it / fact sharing i think..

It will be a right pig for anyone buying a low emission £40k+ car after 1st April.
No benefit for it being low emission, plus an extra £310 after the 1st year.

I had no idea this was happening, I am even looking at new cars at the moment, and making my choices based mainly on running costs due to my current car being £500 a year to tax and less than 25mpg! I would have thought the car companies would use this as a marketing/sales technique to close lots of sales before this comes in?

If the car your looking at would be £500 a year to tax now, you may find it is better to wait until after April 1st before getting a new one. A lot depends on the model and listed price.

Edit: maybe not 226 - 255 will be £1700 for the 1st year, then £140 a year (if list price is under £40k)

You need to do the maths to work out what is best, for my small, cheap 105 CO2 I only pay £20 if buying before April 1st, it would be £140 if I bought after April 1st

Yes I was unaware too someone mentioned to me as I quite fancy getting an electric car. Currently zero tax but won't be in the future. I guess the government realise that if we are all driving electric cars 10 years from now then revenue would be hit hard.

Ouch was looking at getting a Tesla Model 3, if its over £40k thats £310 a year! more than my 3 litre beemer, ludicrous!

Good idea Gary but cut the oil change interval by half now and it will be your best friend
