Hello all

I hate introductions; I'm the one to be found slinking along in the shadows, but here goes. I'm primarily a musician, but have worked across the arts over the years in various roles. I'm currently ruminating over a couple of business ideas I'd like to put into practice - one at a time - and came across this forum yesterday, so decided to register as it seems a busy, helpful community. Due to New Labour imposing a blanket smoking ban, my life as a working musician has died a slow death, albeit kicking and screaming as I put it in the ground. So now I have to look to pastures new as I'm really not cut out for working for someone else. Being self-employed is all I've known. :redface:

Hehe, love it! I have two potential avenues to pursue; one, a publishing company for literature, music audio, & sheet music; and the other is a niche fashion business. I've done the business plan and market research for the latter, it's just a case of figuring out how to source the skills I don't have, rather than sitting down and learning to sew from scratch (which I have no desire to do!)

Firstly, I'll be publishing my novel which is available in e-book version for Kindle through Amazon, but in order to distribute it through a third party as hard copy through the main retailers, I need to form a publishing company as the distribution company doesn't deal with individuals. The book has had a good response and people are asking when it will be in paperback, so I want to do this! This is more my fun project - if it became a hit, that would be a bonus - and it will not be as costly or time-consuming as the other project - niche clothing/fashion - so I'll probably tackle this first. Also, once it's up and running and I have my ISBN catalogue, I'll start publishing works by other authors.

I'm trying to finish a short story which I've been told is really good. Would love to get my work published but with short stories, its all the more difficult.

I'd be interested in folowing your progress with the publishing, you never know, I could be your first client!

Hehe, you could indeed! It's about the people I've met and my experiences in the music/entertainment industry over the past fifteen years, but written as fiction, naturally.

I'm writing the second novel at the moment, but would like to write in other genres, too. I also compose classical music, so will explore publishing pieces for learners. There are lots of useful threads here for all the areas I wish to explore, so I'm just taking it step by step and gleaning helpful information. Hopefully, once I'm up and running, I'll be able to help others, too

Sorry to hear about your loss lol.

Hope you find it useful here. Publishing is a tough industry at the moment - especially paper, though may be a look at Google Books would help?
