Hi,

I'm using both the google adwords keyword tool and the google 'search based' keywords tool to do some keyword research. However, they both differ dramatically. How do you guys usually work out what a reliable figure is for keywords? the search tool will say a keyword has 380 local searches, but the adwords will say it has 1800 local searches. Obviously there is a big difference...but do I just split the difference to find the real search figure, or what?

I generally use the Google Keyword tool, it should give you a pretty good indication of what people search for, also the level of competition, try targetting key phrases that are abit longer.

I currently manage adwords accounts and monitor the keywords for a number of clients and majority of the searches are longer key phrases rather than 1 or 2 word searches.

Don't regard any of the figures as being absolute. Use them as a comparison only.

Also remember that these may not be converting keywords. They will include all those doing what you are doing, those looking for information, your competitors checking up on their ranking all all sorts of other drive-by searchers.

Search based keyword tool returns results from Google search only

Adwords keyword tool returns search volumes including Google properties like maps, images, froogle and gmail.

Hover over the ? mark 'about these results' explains it all there.

Cheers,

Jamie.

It's important to remember that the only terms that Google's Keyword Tool will give you are terms based on ones you type in. This means if you're off the mark on any of your assumptions for words your site should focus on, the results you get may not be relevant.
