Any one else noticed the google keyword tool drastically changing search volume estimates for keywords over this past week,

some terms dropping from 80,000 searches to 6,000.

also notice how the numbers change from the old GKWT interface and the new one.

plus with all the google instant business going on god knows what the search numbers are going to be, obv doesnt make massive amounts of difference as the numbers were rarely close anyway and you can use a test adwords campaign and crappy add to find out true search volume for seo campaigns but come on google how hard can it be to give us the real search numbers

Yes, we noticed this ourselves. Dave Naylor has also posted a note on his blog about it.

Early impressions are that these downward recalculations are closer to reality, but the jury's still out. Be nice to get some explanation from the Google heralds.

Explanation from Google released:

“the previous version of the Keyword Tool provides search statistics based on Google.com search traffic and traffic from search partners, while the updated version of the Keyword Tool provides search statistics based on Google.com traffic only”

Good info and a fair update. It's interesting to see how some keywords drop once Google search partners are out.

Like many of the Google statistics you should never use them as absolute values as you cannot verify the source (how they did the calculations).

If you use the keyword tool as a comparator - for how one keyword compares to another - then nothing is really going to change.

And remember that it has always been an adwords tool so it's missing an awful lot of those lucrative long tail searches.

I've always taken the keyword stats with a pinch of salt. Use as an indicator but never as a true measure

kinda makes you want to laugh at the "seo" companies out there, using those previously useless figures to quote results and sell SEO. Bet they were more than confused.... ahahaha

Run an adwords campaign.

Well the pros are using keyword discovery along with a few other tools.

Adwords has always been a pile of crap as googles interests come first.IMHO
