Hi there,

I want to do repave my garden - its currently a mess.

Garden Paving

I had one builder today and he sounds professional and think he knows what he is talking about - I have no knowledge in this area!
He is going to give me a detailed quote in the next few days, from the indication he has provided:

1. He has measured it to be 40 sqm that needs repaving - He hasn't given me all options for the materials; but from what I am hear it will be standard paving material (approx. £100 per sqm), the other options are Porcelain (most expensive £140 per sqm), middle of the ranges - Indian stone. For me I just told him I want something that is basic, looks tidy, appealing to buyer when I sell it, low maintenance.
2. He says the design itself does not make any difference to the price

My questions:

1. What else should I be asking him about this before I choose him to do the job? I am going to get one more quote from someone else. The overall price he says should be coming close to £5K and he said he will provide a full breakdown and this price range is within my budget of £6K.
2. I found him through checkatrade.com and he is Romanian - hopefully that shouldn't make a difference, but I am not sure how to check his credibility? He says that he has done 282 job completion in his career.
3. He says 90% of households chooses the standard paving material - I just want to check if this is correct?
4. Is there anything else you can can advice me on this?

Shared Driveway - Concrete pouring:

1. The shared driveway is made from concrete to the garage. He says that I would need permission from neighbour to if I want to repour concrete and I think he is correct. My thoughts are. if I asked my neighbour I am sure they going to say "yes" - but I don't want to pay the entire costs myself and guess I could ask. If they don't want to share the cost then I won't do it and I will just ask the builder to fix the broken concrete on my end.

My questions:

1. In the long run if the neighbour never wants to pay to share the cost to repour concrete - where do I stand?
2. It has a lot of moss growth on concrete and is there anything I can do to fix them?

Many thanks

Think you're in the wrong forum. Or it's a wind-up.

Not the wrong forum in my view - perhaps wrong section, “off topic” may be more appropriate.

Can’t help you myself I’m afraid I’m equally clueless on this kind of thing but forums like this IMO are often a great way to get insight from a community that you know (virtually!) and perhaps trust, even if it’s not strictly part of what the forum is “for”.

Our cottage has a shared driveway with the cottage next door
We have lived here for 33 years and my wife and I have managed this drive situation very well .

In my experience the goodwill is priceless and if the neighbour has no intention of spending on the drive then it will go along way if you pay for it.
I would be putting my hand in my pocket to get what I want .
Something will crop up one day and your neighbour will remember it
