    Hi All

Does anyone know what "If you move goods between Great Britain (GB) and countries in the European Union (EU), you might be affected when full customs controls come into effect on 1‌‌‌ January‌‌‌ ‌2022." actually means?

Is it just addition of import charges as well as VAT being incurred by the customers in EU or something else?

    Thanks Mike

    Chaos!

This is Britain - badly governed and badly organised. So the answer is simple - unless you are a giant international corporation that organises its own transport and moves dozens of containers every day.

    Here's some more information:

    https://www.traverssmith.com/knowle...n-eu-imports-are-coming-in-from-january-2022/

At present, as a temporary measure, most goods imported from the EU are allowed to enter the UK without providing full customs paperwork "upfront" (as is currently required for goods entering the UK from non-EU countries). Instead, most businesses can make customs declarations and pay any applicable tariffs "in arrears" (within 6 months of the point of import). Similarly, import VAT does not have to be paid at the point of import; it can be paid at a later date, by using postponed VAT accounting (in the case of VAT-registered businesses).

But from 1 January 2022, customs declarations will be required "upfront" and any applicable tariffs must be paid "upfront" as well (although VAT-registered businesses will still be able to use postponed VAT accounting to avoid having to pay Import VAT at this stage). There is also likely to be a higher level of physical checks (currently these are limited to "high risk live animals and plants").

It's going to be another tier of paperwork...but..it's what we voted for!

You have a few weeks to get a good understanding of your export requirements and paper work many people are just waiting to see what happens but this is a very bad plan

    Hi All,

    Just for clarification.

At the moment there are no customs checks on imports into the UK from the EU. This means the timing of an import customs declaration is not so critical. i know many importers that have done no declarations at all. (If this is you then sort them out retrospectively ASAP - See https://www.woodlandgroup.com/news/brexit-news/changes-ahead-new-brexit-update/)

From 2022 there will be full (normal) customs checks. There is a system in place called GVMS where basically the carrier will need the import customs entry number BEFORE the goods leave the EU. If they do not have this, they won't be able to cross. I do expect this to cause some disruption in the initial weeks of 2022 and certainly longer term I can see less EU carriers wanting to come to the UK. Simply won't be worth the hassle.

    Kind regards,
    Darren.

From now, goods from the EU will be subject to full customs checks and will not ship from the EU until a UK customs entry declaration has been pre-lodged. The UK Gov hopes this system will minimise the risk of lengthy delays at UK ports. Fingers crossed eh!
Marred by the fact that some people could not get on the portal yesterday afternoon :)
