Reaching the final of Euro 2020 is a significantly higher achievement than England Cricket winning the Ashes or England Rugby winning the Rugby World Cup since the level of competition in both those sports is far lower than it is in football
    Oh dear.

There's been no appreciation in this thread - or on this forum - for the fantastic achievement of England's national football team in reaching the final of a major tournament
I'm surprised that's your only take away from this discussion, as my take away is more about the issues in society, financial impact and funding for premier clubs, and the responsibility on social media platforms.

However although the conversation wasn't about what the team achieved, I will add that they did brilliant.

I'm not particularly into boring sports like rugby and cricket

This thread is just a hate thread against football

Cricket is a highly technical game which often isn't appreciated by people with short attention spans whilst football is just 22 men hoofing a ball up and down a field.

I think that's the beauty of having such a diverse range of sports to attract different interests. You see I personally don't find Cricket interesting but that is just me and I have no issue with anyone else liking it, and I don't enjoy the GP but I love the MotoGP and Superbikes.
I don't like football personally but I do like rugby, but my wife and my father-in-law love football.

I lack the attention span for cricket - so 20/20 appeals.

I mentioned 100 to a friend, who is a serious fan of any sport, and he got a bit angry:)

My personal view is that the over-professionalisation of sport makes it less interesting - F1 and football are massive examples; rugby Union might be heading that way too.

I know very little about rugby league, but have been invited to a BBQ this weekend specifically to support St Helens, so let's see...

I don't hate cricket or rugby, just find them utterly boring

Grew up watching county cricket and been to at least 50 domestic and international rugby matches

Nothing is exciting about either sport

At least you can say F1 is mildly entertaining

    What's the takeaways @Ozzy?

Not massive chunks of rhetoric as others have posted

    Simple bullet points please

    Is there another kind?

I can understand the appeal of playing sports - its fun.

I do not understand why people care do much about the outcomes of other people playing. Its just a game.
Haha. There is nothing in the entire world, less important than the outcome of a football match.

Sport these days, like music and shopping, has been hijacked by technology and the quick $$$$

Watching David Bedford smash World 10,000m records on a Sunday afternoon or Cram, Ovett and Coe pitching for honours at 800 and 1500 as they were shown live on terrestrial TV were magical moments. Now, I genuinely couldn't name a single one of our top athletes who hidden on Sky, Catchup, the Red Button or the ever growing DAZN.

Watching Stracey, Minter, Finnegan, Cooper, Bruno, Conteh, Magri and others smash their way to world glory on terrestrial TV were magical moments. Now we see and read more about the contractual disputes and difficulties of making a bout between two British world champions, Joshua and Fury, than we can see actual boxing on terrestrial TV.

In my humble opinion it's no coincidence that two sports featuring regularly on terrestrial TV, Football and Horseracing, are also the most gambled on across the world?

Did you know that factored into sport as one of it's most positive and benefits, alongside sport as a pastime, healthier lifestyles for participants etc., is actually the contribution of sports clothes manufacturing and sale to the bottom line, GDP, whatever you want to call it. Yes, that XXXL, polyester NIKE t-shirt you wallow around on the sofa in, whilst scoffing Dominos latest offering and watching the Antiques Roadshow is ticking a huge box at DCMS despite your less than athletic stature. (Or is that just me? :D)
