There's a current thread on travelling to Guangzhou, and I'll be travelling out to Japan in a few weeks.

I don't know how many members travel internationally on a regular basis, but someone on the Guangzhou thread mentioned flight routing and getting a good deal by transiting in Hong Kong. I know a couple of alternative routes and quite a few useful travel tips for Japan. I thought a general thread on business travel and flight tips might be useful.

Obviously, this isn't FlyerTalk and I assume most of us aren't avgeeks.

Do you think something like this would be a good idea and ok for the forum?

    こんにちは

I don't see a particular reason why not; travelling for business is pretty common, and a thread about getting good deals would be helpful for future SMEs looking for advice.

For the record, I wouldn't recommend Air China or Shanghai Airport, even though they're the cheapest. I flew from Gatwick to Narita in March via Shanghai on Air China. The flight was comfortable, but the check-in process, transfer procedure, and general ground staff attitude were poor and Air China lost the luggage of one of my travelling companions. Shanghai Airport is also pretty lacklustre in terms of facilities.

I'll start up the thread. :)

I've been through Shanghai Pudong - they took all the foreigners off our flight to one side for separate screening by a very stern looking lady in a military uniform, which was quite scary.

I had a similar experience, although only on my return flight. Outbound, we were left without guidance in the transfer area and had to work out where to go for screening.

Would it be worth a separate sub-forum (if that's the right term - like we have "overseas trade", "websites & commerce" etc) for "Business Travel" ?

Could be useful for questions like the Guangzhou one, or generally sharing travel tips - often there's questions about different airlines with their different baggage limitations or check in restrictions etc. Even just in the UK sometimes I'm looking for a recommendation for a nice hotel rather than relying on hotels.com, or looking for restaurants/coffee shops in unknown towns that might be suitable to meet a customer or a colleague (or when I'm on my own, recommendations for decent pubs!).

Just a thought to add on the back of Japancool's... ?
