First page or die!

Wow, it seems that you need to be on the first page at the big search engine or you will never be reached...
It is almost impossible to find the links to move on the the next page with so many damn sites!!

In which case take the sage advice of Ammon Johns:

Oddly, perhaps, in marketing, the key to moving the masses, is actually to take the least travelled path.

Don't try to compete with the players on page one. Use longtail to pick up the huge mass of people who don't plump for the easy 1 word search criteria.

Web hosting must be one of the most competitive industries to get good google ranks for. You need to be creative and chase the long tail searches. You need to get more Niche and try to get ranked for good local terms or good specialist terms.

Exactly, what's the point of spending huge amounts of money to get to the top for a really competitive phrase when most likely there are many longer phrases that can bring equally as much traffic, and sometimes more targetted traffic with higher conversion.

Only problem is to learn the art of finding these phrases =p

But you do actually need something to index first ronnyeo. There's nothing on your site that Google can rank you for.

Well, there's more to marketing than SEO, and more to marketing than Google and more to marketing than search engines.

Surely the foundation of any business plan - or business model - is how you're going to get your offer in front of your prospects... in a profitable way.

If you're in a market where SEO or PPC is going to be difficult, then you surely have an alternative plan to get customers.

Right?

I can see both points of view: going for the top keywords will take a lot of time and probably a sizeable budget. If you can get to the top half of page 1 on big keywords then the payoff can be substantial.

Long tail keywords should work quite well and the time taken to get good rankings will be much shorter. You'll need a LOT of long tails to match the traffic of generic keyword but long tails are likely to convert better.

There are many other alternatives and free in fact. But if you really have control and good results I think SEO and PPC are an excellent option. You can look for some help.
