.eu vs .uk vs .com vs.....etc

Dear Sirs and Ladies

I would like to here your opinion about .eu domains.....and what about if someones already owns yourdomain.com and i get yourdomain.eu ?


What are the legal issues?

Will be more than happy to here from all soon.

If I were launching a new site tomorrow I would always try and get the .com and .co.uk domains. The .eu doesn't appear to me. I'd make the .com the main site.

I would be very careful registering the .eu domain if someone else already has the .com. At the very least it is likely to cause confusion and at worse they could demand your domain off you and you'd lose all the hard work you've done promoting it.

My problem is that all the good .com are taken....if i don't have the permission or is illegal to create a website using .uk or .eu or even something else that someone else already owns the .com then we are they creating other extensions than .com ?

All the 'good' .eus have been taken as well

I would focus on .co.uk if UK based however the .com is always good to have as well.

One option is to find a domain you want that is registered but not used and then approach the owner to buy it.

The problem with that is as soon as the owner knows you're interested they'll hike up the price.

There are plenty of good .coms left, you just have to use your imagination.

The yanks are stupid, they think .co.uk is Ukraine, so if you want to deal in the states buy a .com, personally i would stick to .co.uk

True - it can be worth using a broker (private or existing company) to deal on your behalf. Only really worth doing if looking at spending over £4-5k.

You do have to be realistic as single word / short domains are worth a few quid so if on a lowish budget it could be best seeking initals etc but if there is spendable £ then target what you want

.eu domains aren't very exciting, and I don't think they are likely to take off much in the UK.

I've always first preferred .co.uk for UK centric sites and .com for wider appeal.

.com has much more gravitas than .eu I haven't bothered reserving my company name ones in .eu - because everyone uses my .co.uk and I keep .com reserved just in case. .co.uk have always been popular in the UK, look at sites like amazon, the .com one is for US customers, the .co.uk for UK.

If someone has already got your name, and is using it, no doubt some will argue there are legal steps to be taken, but pretty much, they were there first, think of a new domain and register .co.uk and .com versions if possible.

The original owner of altavisa . com sold for millions, just think of another name or use a hypen version etc.

Two million .eu domain names have been registered - only a few months since they launched! - and as has been commented above, it will be a struggle to find a decent .eu as well now.

It is not that hard or I was lucky. I got pix4.eu (Photographer), copy4.eu (copywriter), and dog-treat.eu, (my main site is dog-treat.co.uk)

I recently bought plaintext.eu as I have clients in Europe.

Yesterday I bought plaintext.biz too.

Unfortunately I can't get the .com as it's been in use for 7 years in the US and there's a fat chance of them selling it. Grrr!
