emails deleting from one machine when receiving on another

I've just got a new PC and set Outlook up on it.

It's sending and receiving fine (IMAP/SMTP) but if I receive emails on my existing PC (pop3) it deletes them from the new one.

How can I get them so they stay on the new one?

You probably have your email client setup to download and delete.

Using IMAP should get your emails synced a bit more.

Ideally, move to google apps (free version) and you can have the emails in different PC's, phones, pads etc, all the same!!!

Yuk.

Don't do this.

Check your pop3 settings. They default to a 'delete from server on download' settings. Deselect this and you should be OK.

Reading a bit more in to it I can set my POP3 not to delete, but if emails stay on server do they clog it up eventually?

Is the real solution that whichever I decide to use I should use on both machines?
ie. IMAP on both or POP3 on both (saving on server for 3 or 4 days so I can retrieve on both machines if I want to)

If I do decide on POP3 how do I change the account on the new PC (using Outlook) from IMAP to POP3?
The option of changing account type is greyed out.

why not?

Because you are reliant on google.

If you host your own site you can set up an imap webmail account. Which means you have total control. I can access my emails on my PC, laptop, iphone, and any other computer in the world. And if I'm in the land of no signal I can still access all my email on all my devices.

No need to use google or any other provider.

Nah, you will have gigathings of space. All you need to do is clear them out every year or two. And of course it's a useful backup if your system dies.

In fact if you have your own dedicated server, you can manage this all through your cpanel.

I've got one domain with about 30 email accounts that have been there for years. A check the other day showned a massive 110Mb of space used. That only leaves me a zillion Gb!

What if the server they are on dies though (or is there less chance of that than my machine)

And what would happen if I accidentally retrived with POP3, would it delete them all?

Think I will keep POP3 on the old PC (but not set to delete) and IMAP on new, that way the old PC is effectively the back up.

Yes that is a bit of an issue, but I do 99% of my sending from the main computer anyway so it's not a major problem for me.

Which is why my way of doing things isn't going to work for everybody.

However, I'd still clear well clear of third party providers. Much better to DIY.

Using IMAP.

It really is a doddle to set up. All you need to do is select IMAP instead of POP3 when you create an account.

POP3 tends to pull it off the server, IMAP leaves it on there. POP3 is like a pull and view, IMAP is just a view.

It's driving me mad

I've used Ofiice since 2003 but have never bothered with Outlook, always just used Outlook Express or Windows Mail.

I think I remember why now

How do I change settings in Outlook, I've been through them a dozen times. "Save copies of messages in the sent item folder" is ticked but nothing goes in my sent items folder when I send.

Can you use Outlook with POP3 and if so how do you change it?

It's not so much accessing on both PC's I just like the idea that they go on to the old one in POP3 and are stored and on the new PC it will then be a lot less clutter.

I just can't seem to get messages I reply to to go in to the sent items folder now, (they were going in there earlier)

Edit to add: they are in sent items folder now, I replied to one more then the other 2 appeared 30 minutes after I sent them
