Easiest ways to design a website!

I'm new to the forum and am extremly happy that there is so many ppl taking the time to help others out.

So i was wondering if one of you kind ppl would advise me on the best and easiest way to build a website, by myself.

I'm a experianced computer user but am new to website design and i do pick up computer related stuff quite easy.

Your help will be greatly appriciated.

It depends what you want the website to do. If you're just after designing it, I really don't think there's much you can do about "learning" design, but if you want to build a website, then you should start learning HTML and move onto XHTML to understand the importance of standards, accessibility and the way that the browsers understand different code.

Sometimes it is better to pay a professional. I am a competent bookkeeper but I still pay an accountant to do my tax returns. You could build your website but remember this is how the world will judge your business. If it looks like an amateur job this will reflect on you. A decent 5 to 10 page website should not cost more than £500. What is the harder part you will find is how to define and present your business in text.

Well basically its selling phone products for another company earning me commission, basically i'd be an Affiliate, so im not to sure on length just yet.

I enjoy learning computer realated stuff and am unemployed at the minute so basically it'll keep me busy while im on the job hunt and at the same time could potentially help me financially.

All i've worked out for now is that im gonna have to link it to another site to get the commission.

The way im looking at it is that if it works it works and if it doesnt, well at least i've tried and have gained a new skill in the process.

Nothing to stop you downloading a few free templates and having a tinker if you want to see how it's done.

Try googling for free website templates and then for free wysiwyg editor :)

Failing that - like Macmyday I don't think we've ever done a 10 page site for £500 but there are people around that can and do - quite often from a country with a different economy so they are happy to give you a decent site for this sort of figure. There are usually caveats attached - like communication issues, time zone issues, length of project, lack of ability to call them etc

In regard to datahounds reply.

I'm unemployed at the minute and have bills to pay, so paying a professional just wouldnt be an option at the minute. All i can do is try myself and decide if what i design is worth looking at. I have some experiance in good design & bad design that was part of an advanced computer course last year but wasnt related to the internet. But i'd assume the principles are the same.

All you can do is try and if you fail try again. Making mistakes is the best way to learn from them. Thank you all for your advice.

I taught myself web design in much the same way when I was unemployed 10 years ago. I also did a course in accountancy. Both of which skills are invaluable.

There is a lot of free how to sites on the internet. I personally work better for a book, usually free from the library. "Sams Teach Yourself.." series I found best.

If you are unemployed courses are free at you college take advantage. I was unemployed 10 years ago, I retrained, reskilled and now have everything I ever dreamed of. Brain food is the key. XHTML, Books on Sales, Accountancy. Invest in the future!

BTW: I build decent websites for £500 but don't tell anyone I don't want to upset the regulars.

Are those type of webhosting sites worth the money. I've looked at a few but they seem to be "to good to be true".

As i said there is no financial benefit reccommending these people, but i know someone that works there. They do pretty good sites. And the hosting is cheap. Might be worth a phone call if nothing else.

You can create quite a nice looking website with a blog thrown in for good measure by using WordPress - google it because I can't currently include links in posts here - too new ;)

Although it's primarily a blogging platform, it's also quite a good content management system with plenty of templates out there you can adapt.

I found the easiest way to set up my website was using netaspace.com -they provided development support & marketing info on promoting my site

The Clairehaas.co.uk link looks like a really basic site. If this was the kind of site you would get I would suggest that you could design your own a lot better and be free to host with whomever you chose.

I also like the personal approach because in my view nothing helps you understand what you want from a site and how to design it than going through the process yourself (however many times it may take).

we have a very user friendly webbuilder which is free to anyone who has webhosting from us .
d30web.com there is a free demo on the site
