E-commerce website categories

I am trying to decide the best way to categorise a website that sells clothing.

So we have brands and then inside that coats, t-shirts, shorts etc, but we also will have mens, Womens and accessories and inside them it will have coats, t-shirts, shorts etc.

I am trying to find the best way to organise these - any suggestions would appreciate.

Look at what the major retailers do - they've done the research. Pay attention to the navigation, search, filtering and sorting.

Multiple categories for each product.

And then monitor how people use the site. Expect to have to change things many times until you find the way that works for you.

Modern ecom platforms will have a category structure, however, the ability to tag extend this dramatically, so you could have Mens/Womens/Boys/Girls as main categories, and maybe even trousers, skirts, jumper etc, but when you then start creating tags, it becomes more powerful. You then start linking by tags, not just/even categories.
