Do I need a solicitor to register trademark

Hi All

Hope you are well.

I don't currently require a trademark, however, thinking ahead I've started to do some research into the process both in the UK and overseas.

Focussing on registering in the UK for the moment, I have found the cost to register a trademark for one class is £170.

Having had a loot at the cost for a solicitor to register a trademark for one class seems to average around £800. I appreciate their fee takes into account them doing some searching to check the mark doesn't already exist etc.

My question is - is it worth paying for a solicitor to register the mark or is it worth doing yourself? I'm assuming you can just do your own search to check the mark doesn't already exist. Would there be any other particular benefit in having a solicitor carry out the whole process?

Would appreciate any experience or knowledge you can share.

Many Thanks

Don’t forget, if there is an objection or your application is rejected you lose the £170. If you change your application and resubmit you pay another £170.

Do you really need a trademark? I’ve never bothered as I don’t have a brand worth protecting.

From memory you can do a 'lite' application for £100.

I have a brand worth protecting, but can't protect it.

I have protected one which isn't really important, just for a laugh really.

£800 seems rather high. I'm being charged £200 (+ official fees), although it's part of a package where they also do the EU trademark.

I think the main thing is that the cost of making a mistake is relatively high since not only you need to pay the fee again, but you need to wait again several weeks to get an answer. But I guess if everything goes smoothly you would have saved a bit of money.
