credit card payments

Hi All

I'm brand new to this forum although I hope to become an active member over the coming weeks.

I'm having a little bit of trouble regarding taking payment from new clients.

I run a b2b company that sends out invoices to clients in order to receive payment but recently we have started getting orders from members of the public that want to pay by credit card, they are willing to give their credit card details over the phone but we do not have the facilities set up yet.

Could anyone let me know what requirements I will need in order to hold the clients credit card details and any laws I need to know about?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Your bank will advise you about setting up a static terminal, but other members on here do other options. I think the law states you must destroy CC details after you have used them, unless the customer has given their permission for you to keep them. It is good practice to do this anyway.

Hi,

If you only need occasional credit card facilities, it maybe worth looking at Transx. We have used them for a while now and have had no problems. Most of our clients pay be cheque, but we get a few a week who want to use their card. With transx we just take their card details and use the virtual terminal online. Fees are quite good. Good points are that there are no monthly fees so if you dont use it for a month, it costs you nothing. Bad side is it an take about 2 weeks for the money to get to your bank account. Has worked well for us though. Web addy is transx.co.uk

I use Streamline which was reccommended through my bank. They come and install a terminal and talk you through a large boring book of instructions!

Payments go into our business account within the usual 3-4 working days and technical support is excellent.

Only problem is £40per month rental for the system. Commisions are also charged depending the type of card but they're nominal.

Not great for credibilty if this is important to you but you could try using paypal?!!

We use paypal virtual terminal. It's a mere £20 a month and it's all done via the paypal manager website... you just type in the card details etc and process the transaction. The client doesn't know that you use paypal as your company name show on the statement.

If you're looking for a cheap and basic service you can't go far wrong.
