Cpanel domain add on sub domain error help

I am trying to submit an addon domain to my godaddy cpanel, I have the domain registered elsewhere, but when using the autofill section for the domain - the subdomain uses www but it comes up with this error

"Sorry, www cannot be used in subdomains. It is implicitly added to all newly created subdomains."

Any suggestions on what to use or whats causing the problem?

I added (example) thedomain.com as the domain - it auto added www as the subdomain and I chose the directory but it came up with the error, so I just put subdomain as thedomain without the .com and it seems to have worked.

Should this work?

Also, how quick does nameservers take to change?

To be honest, that sounds a bit odd as I doubt it will accept it / work without the .com. That is unless you are adding in a subdomain rather than an addon domain.

Maybe take it back a step and let me know what you are trying to achieve.

Nameservers should change relatively quickly depending on the system you are using (with an hour or so). It can take up to 24 hours after that happens for it to fully start working.

I have a domain registered with another company.

I am trying to add it to my account at godaddy without transferring, when I go to my cpanel to add the domain after I changed the nameservers at external domain provider.

1. I add domainname.com
2. Asks for a sub-domain - so I put domainname as it wont allow me to put www
3. Choose the directory folder

Typically the subdomain used by the Addon domain will simply be the domain excluding the extension. In this case you add the domain domainname.com as an Addon domain, and use domainname as the subdomain/FTP username.

You don't want to specify the www. prefix. However you can use any subdomain for the Addon domain if you want. The Addon domain just creates a DNS record pointing the domain to your account.

cPanel should auto fill these fields for you.

e.g. Entering domainname.com in the first field to specify the Addon domain (New Domain Name), should auto fill:
Subdomain or FTP Username: domainname
Document Root: public_html/domainname.com

I hope that helps.

One little tip I give to people when adding addon domains is to change the default path to somewhere outside of public_html. So e.g. create a folder in root called "websites" and set your path to websites/domainname.com instead of public_html/domainname.com. Your new addon domains then wont effect any website you may have in your default public_html folder.

Or do you mean it keeps public_html less cluttered as you will only see directories related to the primary site there? I can see that being useful.

Exactly. Addon domains no longer reside in the public_html folder which is typically used by the website of the primary domain, It also adds additional security so that FTP accounts can be set up with the home folder as on public_html but wont have automatic access to other add-on websites within it.
