Could you check this spec please?

OK I'm rebuilding the office computer and using some of the bits from it for the new system. Could I ask you to take a look at this spec and advise any improvements?

whats the primary use of the pc?

Web development and server emulation. I have running at all times stuff like IIS, SQL server, ColdFusion, MySQL etc as well as Dreamweaver and a multitude of browser windows and apps.

So no heavy duty graphic work just a lot of memory intensive apps...

well the deciding factor would be ram and 64bit....which i think you have adequately covered with your setup.
Are you using virtuals?

Aye. I'll be using VMWare but only for a couple of OS's and testing only so not much stress on them...

then your spec looks perfect...just watch out for a few funky admin access probs with vista 64 and iis7

It will be a nice PC with that mobo & CPU tbh, and your 'existing' components are not too old to go in there either. The basics are fine for future upgrading as you deem fit too, so fine.

The GFX cards are nothing special really, but more than fit for your purpose.

I love those Velociraptor HDD's too

XP pro 64 bit is my weapon of choice in this case...

Cheers Mark, that covered my other concern in getting a MOBO for the future rather than short term...

 

Not really a hardware techie but it sounds like quite a lot in the box so how is the cooling being taken care of. Also sounds like you need high availability so where is the UPS

I can get hold of a Spire S775 fan for the processor for less than a tenner. The case comes with a 120mm fan at the back and I can fit another 2 80mm fans at the front which should be ok?

If you want a couple of 80mm case fans, drop me an email with an address & I'll send you a couple. I have a large box of them which is way more than I need.

Your 450W PSU will cover what you have said above, so no problems there.

When you build this machine be extra careful that it has decent airflow around the outside of the case too, as well as inside. People tend to forget about that and push it up tight against desks, etc, thereby blocking vents.
