Hi ll - just spotted someone that is copying me quite blatently - i think anyway. My site is

http://www.buythemap.com - I was checking out my auctions and came across this site - looks reallt similar, infact I think just a copy, perhaps Im being overly protective, but wanted to see if people agree. Should I do anything>?

yeah ownthemap was the first copycat - thats the first time have seen buyacountry - thats really bad...and confusing to move around.

i guess on the one hand it's quite cool that people are copying the idea, but on the other hand a bit frustrating.

one other site I am aware of is Virtualrealestateonline which did setup independantly of me - me and the owner of that have been intouch - our ideas although similar have panned our quite differently in practice..

Oh it definately is flattering. And those who don't misrepresent themselves when doing it are perfectly fine in my book. It's people who lie to get info so they can profit off your idea that piss me off.

are you sure you have the right guy? how many copies of your idea are there already?

Copying the way someone has expressed an idea is copyright infringement. Trading off someone else's reputation is passing off. Imitating another person's trade mark is an offence.

I didn't know copying the way someone has expressed an idea is copyright infringement. I don't know if you've followed my threads in reference to the website missiontoparty.com copying my idea (their site is down temporarily i believe before they relaunch). I was under the impression that you couldn't copyright an idea but if copying the way someone has expressed an idea is illegal than i most definately have a case. Their business model is almost identical in every way with maybe one exception in how they pay people. But how they make money and solicit bars is literally a copy and paste and the owner had talked to me personally about the idea prior to launching his copy.

Copying someone else's business model is not copyright infringement, but copying the way they have expressed that business model in manuals, written instructions and guidelines, printed matter, graphic designs, etc is an infringement of the copyright in those materials.
