To increase sales I am looking to boost my google ranking. However because I am within a competitive industry and just starting out I am being quoted a lot of money to increase the ranking of my website, for keywords such as: call answering, telephone answering, etc....

Are they any solutions.......

What do you call a lot of money.?

As you say very competative market.

SEO in general is priced according to the difficulty of the product market place.( or it should be )

The price will reflect the difficulty and the profitability ( or it should do ).:D

Well, nobody really gives you a set figure or offers any guarantees. Which I can understand thats the nature of SEO.

But its frustrating, and ideally I am looking for a cost effective way to boost our google ranking.

I know someone might reply and say, do it yourself. But my knowledge of this is very limited, and I wouldn't have a clue what to do.

The page one sites seem to be ranking mainly due to domain age, none of them are particularly strong pages IMHO.

For starters sort out your on-page optimisation, your developer should be able to help or someone in this forum will no doubt offer their services. Merit based link building won't be easy so you could try some article marketing, articles spelling out the benefits of call answering services for example.

Think about Google as a system that's trying to offer the best resources that match the search, it's your job to make your site the best resource. Don't look for short cuts, there aren't any.

Start learning then. If I said I could help you for £1000 then how would you know whether I was genuine or not?

What you need is to re-do your website so it is better optimised, add content and get links from other websites. All of this will take time and and lot of involvement by you.

If anyone says they can solve your problem for a certain figure then it's highly likely that you will be better off taking your money out of the bank and burning it.

DIY isn't an option for everyone and to suggest you can't hire someone to work for you seems a little odd. He could hire a freelancer to sort his on site issues, develop content and look for linking opportunities.

I'd agree that if someone offers page one guarantees then he should run a mile but to suggest he can't hire someone to work for him seems a little odd.

Just my humble opinion.

I didn't say he shouldn't hire someone - just that he should have some basic knowledge before doing so.
For instance, you don't have to have too much knowledge about seo to know that miracles can't happen overnight. That would eliminate 90% of the people offering to work for him?

I would tweak your current site before you hire a "professional". Currently all your title tags are the same and rather short i presume all your meta descriptions are the same also, that needs to be altered.

Your image title tags are just "click here" you might find dropping keywords helps slightly "Call assistants + area ".

You seem to be targetting the whole country i think picking the big cities would be best. Your content doesnt really contain any phrase structure in my view.

You also need to fix your head as your keyword tag seems to be wrong so google cant really tell what you are aiming for. Also revise / alter the keywords you are targetting.

SEO isn't magic you don't need an expert to do it especially if you're a small fish. You're better of learning how to do it and at least attempting the basics yourself. That will a) help you learn what the core components of SEO are b) you'll end up cleaning up and improving the fundamentals of your site.

With the above under your belt if you have the budget and then want to hire you'll atleast know what it's all about and hopefully be a little more informed when hiring.

Excellent SEO specialists are probably not within your budget I'm afraid to say. So I stongly recommend you simply go it alone until you hit the point that you can't go beyond. Take it as far as you can and then when you reach a plateau start looking for a specialist but don't jump in, take your time.

Oh and areas you need to look into if you're new to SEO are

- Link Building
- Onsite Optimisation

Good areas to get you going.

Alan, I had a look and my first impression is that whoever did the current SEO on the website did so without a plan. I note that the page titles, descriptions and on page text appear not to be focussing on the same keywords.

Also, while I am not in your line of business I always understood the keywords most associated with what you do to be "virtual assistant" and you have not targeted these.

We are producing a DIY SEO guide, which may be of some use to you. It may eventually be offered for a small fee but I need someone like you to read through it and to comment on the contents. Email me if you are interested in having a look at it. (If doing so email through the website please.)

If you're just starting out with a new website, aim for longtail and local targeting first, with big generic keywords as your second priority. As the website and its link profile matures, you'll find the generic keywords much easier to compete for.

Walk before you can run, to avoid tripping up. :)
