My personal experience is that the volume of pure crap and scams that direct marketing generates means that there is effectively no chance of anything not crap being seen by me. I junk everything- email spam, stuff pushed through the door, cold calls. Everything gets blocked or binned. Yet somehow I seem to get by without it.

The most effective tool for blocking telephone spam is call screening. TrueCall did it first and you can now get it in domestic phones, it works brilliantly.

People who have made up their mind before knowing what it's all about well if I'd know that beforehand there would be no intent to contact you ever.

Why waste time for people who are already perfectly happy?
Makes no sense trying to convince someone with a possessed closed mind-set to open up.
    No offense intented.

The world is full of them. The best recipe against crisis in investment in marketing, what most people do is the opposite, worldwide they clamp down and reduce expenditure. Then they turn around and complain about the bleak situation.

Just today I was contacted to help and the group was not willing to spend 30 pound (a year) on a shared server.

Well you know, if you call people closed minded, they're likely to take offence. And given that the world is "full of them" you're going piss off a lot of people.

Good reason to stay away from that tactic. It's a rumor that those are more effective. Client profile I prefer is mature enough to see an advantage.

Close or narrow minded people run their businesses' into the ground, politicians apply a similar tactic with "their" countries. Smaller and smaller is their view,

As usually I make a cold call in this way:

secretary - Hello, my name is Jenny, and how can I help you?
me - Hi Jenny, my name is Yuriy, connect me with Scott, and tell him Yuriy is calling?
( in 50% of cases I'm connected, but if not, read further )
secretary - is he expecting your call?
me - This is Yuriy, please connect me with Scott, thanks
    ( in 30% of cases I'm connected )
secretary - what's the matter of your call?
me - That is about your RFID Qualitization, isn't Scott in the office?

that gives me around 90% of pass rate.

Looks like I have done a great job of training my staff, you would have a 0% chance of getting connected to me!

When cold calling sometimes you will need to speak to the CEO of small organisations.

However, you come across their gatekeeper who tells you that "whatever it is...you can email me and I'll make sure they get it".

Difficult one because if you say "I'd rather send it direct thank you very much" you've now fallen out with the gate keeper which is probably not a great idea.

My gut feeling is that this response must be handled with grace and charm.

How do you deal with gatekeepers like this?
You could try and email direct. Try and find the generic format. It can take a few goes but it does work. Next time you call someone saying 'I've been asked to send information' may work.

Thanks for all the super advice!

I decided to bypass the gatekeeper altogether and followed a "direct email" strategy to the CEO and Head of X OR the company VP. I used a nice simple and concise email. I sent it about 20 companies in a specific niche and have got two appointments. Chuffed with this result. (I got the email addresses from RocketReach).

I've still not dismissed cold calling as I believe you get invaluable insights into ways in which your prospect think. It also gives you great practice talking about your service.
