Hi,

We are looking for a Cisco Router with the below minimum requirements

• Rack Mountable
• 2 x Wan Ports (1Gbps)
• 1 x Lan Ports (Gbps)
• IP4 / IP6 Dual Stack
• Support for several separate public IP Subnet's on Lan Interface

This router is to be used as a core router which will connect to other devices such as firewalls and routers.

Hi there,

It really depends how you are planning on configuring your WAN connections i.e. are you taking a default route, or do you want to run BGP etc but depending on budget you could start with a Cisco 2921 which supports three gigabit interfaces of which two could be configured for your WAN and the remainder as your LAN - these are all copper, but one does accept a fibre SFP if you need to connect with that media. Additional HWIC's (High Speed WAN Interface Cards) are available if you need additional copper or fibre ports too. These support IPv6 and are 2U rackmountable.

You also need to watch what the actual rated throughput is of the router - just because it has gig ports doesn't mean its capable of gig, and if you are running high numbers of small packets (VoIP) for example, you can seriously beat up the CPU.

If you give an indication of actual traffic, we can comment on whether a 2921 is suitable or not.

Very good point Pete - depending on configuration and application, you should be able to get anywhere between 200Mbps and 350Mbps throughput on the 2921.
