As people aren't beating a path to my door to buy my display stands, (one or two regular customers) I put my welding talents to use making spit roasters. I have made and sold several in the past, but as they are rather labour intensive, (work out at £255.00) a bit expensive for a "one off" party.
So, I have made a couple and started hiring them out locally (West Berkshire)at £45.00 for a weekend.
As a large pig can take over 10 hours to cook, I am building a prototype electrically powered spit.
Question is.... do I get my food hygiene accreditation and start doing the whole thing or look for an already qualified partner ?

I'm no expert in Food Hygiene accreditation but I suspect you might get a better answer if you posted this in one of the other forums rather than this Introductions one.

However have you tried approaching Government agencies for advice?

What about Business Link? They are suppose dto help local businesses get off the ground so I am sure they can point you to the right people.

Good luck and I think the idea of hiring them out is a great one especially if you link up with a local butcher or two. They can probably advertise in their shops that they would supply a pig and spit roast. They get to sell a pig, you get the hire price for the spit.

I love your business idea!

With a welding skill under your belt, you're probably able to knock up a lot of different things!

Would it be possible for you to knock up a complete set of Medieval cooking equipment/themed accessories, and then rent the whole lot out to people as a Medieval night at their home?

I.e. crude metal plates, metal goblets for wine, your spit... etc.

As for the Food Hygine, my friend said there wasn't "that" much to it. If you can afford the time and money to get the 'accreditation' then just go for it

Your post may get a better response in the "Legal" or "General Business" areas of the UK Business Forums though

Thanks for the welcomes and the advice, I am still employed full time, so this enterprise is "weekend" working.
I have had some postcards printed and will "do the rounds" of the local butchers.
